Nigeria’s home-based Super Eagles suffered
one of their darkest days in African Nations Championship (CHAN) history on Tuesday night, tumbling to a 4-0 defeat against Sudan in Zanzibar.

The scoreline not only sealed their group-stage exit with a game to spare but also left a lingering sense of what-could-have-been for a team that had promised so much just months ago.

From tactical mishaps to questionable selections, here are five talking points from a night Nigerian fans will want to forget — but must remember.

1. Nigeria's Chicken Eagles are out and deservedly so

Two games, zero goals, four conceded, and no points. That’s Nigeria’s record in Group D after back-to-back losses to Senegal and Sudan.

This disappointing exit isn’t a case of bad luck but the result of disjointed performances and a lack of cohesion.

Even if the Eagles beat Congo in their final match, the maximum three points will still leave them as the poorest side to have represented the green and white flag at the CHAN.

The contrast with Sudan and Senegal, both on four points, is stark. Where others have shown organisation and bite, Nigeria have looked unsure and underwhelming.

2. Chelle’s Eagles have etched several unwanted records

This is the first time in CHAN history that Nigeria have lost their opening two matches.

The only other group-stage exit came in 2016, but even then the Eagles managed a win and a draw to finish with four points.

Under Eric Chelle, the numbers look bleaker: three consecutive CHAN defeats stretching back to the 2018 edition — another unwanted first. This campaign will end with Nigeria’s lowest-ever points tally at the tournament.

3. The coaching gamble that backfired

It’s impossible to ignore the decision that shaped this campaign before a ball was kicked: replacing Daniel Ogunmodede with Eric Chelle.

Ogunmodede had guided the team through qualifying, holding Ghana to a draw away and winning comfortably at home. His side had heart, discipline, and a tactical edge.

The Nigerian Football Federation, however, asked him to hand over to Chelle, fresh from his success with the senior team at the Unity Cup, to lead the CHAN charge.

Rather than build on an already functional unit, Chelle reshaped it to fit his own ideas.

The result? A team with defensive naivety, a lightweight midfield, and a blunt attack.

4. Critics were right about NPFL selection

From the squad list’s release, murmurs grew louder: Chelle had not brought the best of the Nigeria Premier Football League.

Many argued the selection leaned too heavily on Remo Stars players, raising questions about fairness and balance.

Chelle insisted he chose players who could interpret his project and fit his system. But after two matches of toothless attack and fragile defending, it’s hard to argue against the critics.

The CHAN stage exposed the squad’s limitations, and by extension, the coach’s judgement.

5. Chelle’s shiny start now under scrutiny

Before CHAN 2024, Eric Chelle’s stock was high.

Positive results against Rwanda and Zimbabwe in the World Cup qualifiers qualifiers, plus a Unity Cup win in London, had many calling him the next big thing in Nigerian coaching.

That impressive draw with Russia in Moscow also added to his sheen.

This tournament, however, has been a sobering reality check. Nigeria not only failed to score but also rarely looked like scoring.

Conceding four goals in two games while crashing out early will inevitably prompt questions about his tactical approach, adaptability, and decision-making.

The CHAN setback means Chelle’s next fixtures, World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa in September, are now must-wins if he is to restore faith.

For a tournament designed to showcase domestic talent, this was a performance that did the NPFL and Chelle no favours.
