“Too much pressure in that job” – Ex-Leicester City star rules out coaching Nigeria

The Nigerian women's national team has had two coaches in the last two years with the current head gaffer in an interim role

Super Falcons star Ashleigh Plumptre has quashed any speculation linking her to a future coaching role with the Nigerian national team, declaring it’s “too much pressure.”

The 27-year-old defender, currently starring for Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia, made the light-hearted but definitive comment during a pre-match press conference ahead of the former African champion's WAFCON 2024 quarterfinal against Zambia.

The conversation was sparked by her recent attainment of a UEFA B coaching license.

Journalist Osasu Obayiuwana took the opportunity to probe:

“Now you have your UEFA B coaching license, perhaps you’re on the way to becoming the national team coach one day?”

Plumptre, smiling, replied emphatically:

“Noooooo! Too much pressure in that job.'

While coaching may not be in her immediate plans, Plumptre remains a crucial figure in Nigeria’s current WAFCON campaign. She has featured in all three group matches so far, helping the Super Falcons maintain a perfect defensive record with three consecutive clean sheets.

The Falcons left-back's performances earned her a well-deserved place in CAF’s official Best XI of the group stage.

Plumptre joined Al Ittihad in 2023 after leaving Leicester City, where she developed into one of Nigeria’s most consistent performers. Since moving to Saudi Arabia, she has grown into a key defensive leader both at club and country level.

The Super Falcons, led by interim boss Justin Madugu following Randy Waldrum’s departure, face Zambia’s Copper Queens in the quarterfinals on Friday.

The pressure may not appeal to Plumptre as a future coach, but she remains determined to help Nigeria push toward a record-extending 10th WAFCON title.

The Super Falcons have never failed to reach the semifinals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
