The 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, season is heading towards one of the most dramatic finishes in recent memory, with only two matchdays left and three clubs still mathematically capable of winning the title, Soccernet.ng reports.
At the top of the table, Rangers International lead the way with 62 points after 36 matches. Just one point behind them are Rivers United on 61 points, while newly promoted Ikorodu City remain outsiders with 58 points after a remarkable campaign few predicted at the start of the season.
The tension increased at the weekend after Rangers secured a vital 2-0 away victory over Bayelsa United. The Flying Antelopes handled the pressure brilliantly in Yenagoa, scoring twice and keeping another clean sheet to remain in control of the title race. Powered by goals from Chidiebere Nwobodo and Godwin Obaje, Rangers sealed three crucial away points that may have tilted this season's title Enugu-bound.
Interestingly, second-placed Rivers United refused to fall away. Finidi George’s side responded with a commanding 3-0 win over Abia Warriors in Port Harcourt to keep the gap at only one point heading into the final stretch.
Ikorodu City also stayed alive after another important result, continuing a season that has transformed them from newcomers into genuine contenders. The Lagos-based ‘Oga Boys' have become the story of the campaign and are still capable of causing a huge shock if results go their way.
Behind the top three, Shooting Stars sit fourth with 57 points and are battling hard for continental qualification rather than the title itself.
The title race is expected to go down to the final day on May 25, with Rangers due to make the trip to Lagos to face Ikorodu City in what could become a decisive showdown. Rivers United, meanwhile, will face Katsina United and hope Rangers drop points.

However, Rangers could wrap up the title as early as May 10 when they host Bendel Insurance. A win for the Antelopes against the Benin Arsenal and a loss for Rivers United away at Wikki Tourists on same day would be enough for the 2024 champions to reclaim the crown.
Rangers' history meets Rivers United’s modern ambition
This title battle has also become a clash between two different football identities in Nigeria.
Rangers International represent history, tradition and deep emotional connection. Founded in 1970 shortly after the Nigerian Civil War, the Enugu club became a symbol of unity and fortitude across the South-East and earned the nickname ‘Never-Say-Die'.
The Flying Antelopes are the only club never to have been relegated from Nigeria’s top division. They have won eight league titles in 1974, 1975, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1984, 2016 and 2024, as well as six FA Cup trophies.
Rangers also made continental history in 1977 when they became the first Nigerian club to win the African Cup Winners’ Cup. Over the years, they have produced legendary figures such as Christian Chukwu, Emmanuel Okala and Austin ‘Jay-Jay' Okocha. Now they stand on the verge of another historic triumph.

Rivers United, however, represent the modern model of Nigerian football. Formed in 2016 after the merger of Sharks FC and Dolphins FC, the Port Harcourt club was created to build a stronger and more competitive side capable of challenging consistently both domestically and in Africa.
The project quickly delivered success. Rivers United won their first NPFL title in 2022 with a record-breaking 77 points and have remained one of the league’s most organised teams since then.
Under Finidi George this season, their defensive discipline has become one of their greatest strengths. They have conceded only 29 goals in their 36 matches, the joint-second best in the division.
The club also inherited the legacy of Dolphins, who won league titles in 2004 and 2011 and reached the CAF Confederation Cup final in 2005.
NPFL: The final fixtures and the rules that could decide everything
The current race is already being described as the tightest NPFL title battle since 2017.
Back then, Plateau United won their first-ever title after entering the final day with a one-point advantage over MFM FC.
The pressure Rangers now face feels very similar. Unlike some previous seasons, this campaign also includes a third contender. Ikorodu City’s presence has added extra tension because they could still influence the fate of both Rangers and Rivers United.

The league’s tie-breaking rules may also become extremely important over the next two games.
According to NPFL regulations, teams level on points are separated first by goal difference, not head-to-head record. Goals scored come next, followed by goals conceded. Only after those factors are considered does head-to-head performance come into play. That means every goal could matter.
Rangers currently control their destiny. The Enugu Warlords have the best attack (43 goals scored), the best defence (25 goals conceded) and the best goal difference in the NPFL (+18). If they win their remaining two games, they will become champions regardless of what Rivers United do.
Rivers United, however, know that even one Rangers slip could completely change the picture. If both sides finish level on points, goal difference may determine the champion.
Ikorodu City still have a mathematical chance too, although they would need victories in their remaining matches and favourable results elsewhere.
There is even a rare ‘play-off clause' within NPFL regulations. If two clubs somehow finish level on points, goal difference, goals scored, goals conceded and head-to-head record, the league board can order a one-off title-deciding play-off at a neutral venue.
At the other end of the table, defending champions Remo Stars are fighting to avoid relegation after a shocking collapse that has left them sitting 18th. No club has been relegated yet with only two games left but Remo Stars, Kun Khalifat FC, Wikki Tourists and Bayelsa United are the favourites to go down.
But the biggest focus remains on Rangers, Rivers United and Ikorodu City.
With one point separating first and second place, and history waiting to be written, the NPFL is preparing for a dramatic ending few Nigerian football fans will forget anytime soon.
