Did Asamoah Gyan accuse Victor Osimhen of faking Rwanda injury? Ghana legend breaks silence

Ghanaian football hero Asamoah Gyan has finally reacted to reports suggesting he accused Victor Osimhen of faking an injury during Nigeria’s World Cup qualifier against Rwanda, Soccernet.ng reports.

Gyan, Ghana’s all-time top scorer, has categorically denied recent reports flying around in the local and international media pointing accusing fingers at Nigeria and Galatasaray striker, Osimhen.

The former Black Stars captain was dragged into controversy earlier this week after Turkish outlet Habersarikirmizi claimed he had questioned the legitimacy of Osimhen’s injury.

According to the report, Gyan was quoted as saying the striker was told by Galatasaray to “go to Africa, play a bit, then act injured” so he could return early and focus on club football.

The comments spread quickly across social media, sparking heated debate among fans of both Nigeria and Ghana.

But Gyan has now publicly dismissed the story, calling it fabricated. Responding to a post on X, he wrote: “This is fake news, my brother.”

The account that tweeted the false report has also apologised to Gyan and deleted his post.

Osimhen picked up a leg injury during Nigeria’s 1-0 win over Rwanda in Uyo on September 6 and was substituted in the first half.

The 26-year-old was later ruled out of the Super Eagles’ 1-1 draw against South Africa three days later. Medical checks at Galatasaray have since confirmed he will miss up to two weeks of action.

The claims attributed to Asamoah Gyan were particularly explosive given the long-standing rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria, and the perception among some fans that European clubs often discourage African players from featuring in qualifiers. But Gyan's statement reveals he never cast doubt on Osimhen’s integrity.

Nigeria's second all-time highest goaldcorer, Osimhen will look to shift his focus to recovery as he targets a return in time for Galatasaray’s Champions League group stage opener.
