Nigeria welcome the Barea to the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, with kick-off scheduled for 5 pm Nigerian time.

The match is taking place at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, with Nigeria looking to begin their qualification campaign with three points before travelling to Guinea-Bissau for their second Group L fixture on September 29.

Super Eagles seek winning start

Chelle has urged his players to attack the qualification campaign from the first game and avoid another difficult race for qualification.

“We have to show everyone from Day One that we want it, and the only way to do that is to go for it with our hearts and refuse to slow down at any point,” the Super Eagles coach said.

“We must go for the points without any hesitation.”

Nigeria are in Group L alongside Madagascar, Guinea-Bissau and co-hosts Tanzania.

With Tanzania already guaranteed a place at the 2027 AFCON as one of the tournament hosts, Nigeria, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau are effectively competing for the group’s remaining qualification spot.

That makes today’s opening fixture particularly important for the Super Eagles. Madagascar will also arrive in Uyo with memories of their famous 2-0 victory over Nigeria at the 2019 AFCON in Egypt.

The Barea have won just once in five senior meetings between the two countries, with Nigeria winning three and the other encounter ending in a draw.

Osimhen absent as Chelle weighs attacking options

Nigeria’s preparations have been affected by the absence of Osimhen, who was withdrawn from the squad because of injury.

Chelle retained a core of several attacking options, including Ademola Lookman, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Akor Adams, Tolu Arokodare, Taiwo Awoniyi, George Ilenikhena and Moses Usor.

Ilenikhena is among the new faces in the squad, while Arthur Okonkwo and Isaac James have also received senior invitations as Chelle continues to shape his Super Eagles team.
