Official: FC Porto sign Nigerian wonderkid Abraham Obasi

FC Porto have signed 18-year-old Nigerian forward Abraham Chibuike Obasi to a professional contract, Soccernet.ng reports.

Porto announced the signing of the young Nigerian attacker on their official media platforms on Tuesday.

Obasi, born on April 25, 2008, will initially join FC Porto's Under-19 setup for the 2026/27 season rather than move directly into the club's senior squad. His arrival gives the Portuguese giants another young attacking option to develop within one of Europe's most respected youth systems.

After completing the paperwork, Abraham Obasi declared, “I want to score goals and help the team to ensure we keep moving forward.”

The move comes after Obasi built his reputation in Nigerian youth football and made an impression on the international academy tournament circuit with One Touch Abuja.

His profile became much clearer during the 2026 Viareggio Cup in Italy, where he finished among the competition's leading scorers. Obasi scored four goals in five appearances, averaging a goal every 96 minutes across 382 minutes of action. Only three players finished ahead of him in the scoring chart, with his four-goal return putting him level with several established youth prospects.

One Touch's participation also placed Obasi against youth sides from established European clubs. He started the tournament wearing the No. 9 shirt.

The tournament also produced one unusual moment in Obasi's campaign. He was sent off against Vis Pesaro after being involved in a second-half incident. The match was eventually suspended because of heavy rain before resuming, with One Touch holding on for a 2-1 victory.

His performances helped put him on the radar of clubs outside Nigeria, and FC Porto have now taken the next step by securing his professional future.

Obasi opens new FC Porto chapter

There is already evidence that Porto's youth coaches have had a chance to see him in action. Obasi featured for the club's Under-18 side at the Best Cup in Madrid in August, coming off the bench during FC Porto's 2-1 victory over Espanyol in the final. Porto had earlier beaten AD Unión Adarve 3-0, Real Betis 3-1 and Real Madrid 2-1 on the way to the trophy.

That experience gives Obasi a useful head start as he begins life as a Porto player.

At 18, the Nigerian forward is still at the development stage. His professional contract is an important step, but the next challenge will be converting his youth-level goals into the consistency required to climb Porto's academy ladder.

If he can do that, Obasi could become another Nigerian attacker to use Portugal as a route into European football.
