Francis Onyeka’s Bundesliga breakthrough gives Chelle fresh Super Eagles option

Francis Onyeka gave Nigeria coach Eric Chelle another reason to follow his progress closely after producing a lively display for SV Elversberg against his parent club Bayer Leverkusen in their Bundesliga opener, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 19-year-old started as the attacking midfielder in Vincent Wagner's 4-2-3-1 system at the Ursapharm-Arena an der Kaiserlinde on Saturday.

He made an immediate impact. Onyeka supplied the pass for Lukas Petkov to score after only eight minutes, giving Elversberg the first goal in their first-ever Bundesliga match. The newly promoted side then raced into a 2-0 lead when Cole Campbell scored in the ninth minute. David Mokwa added a third just after half-time as Elversberg produced a remarkable performance against one of Germany's established clubs.

Leverkusen pulled two goals back through Patrik Schick and Christian Kofane, but Elversberg held on for a 3-2 victory.

The result gave Onyeka a memorable Bundesliga debut and added to the growing attention around his international future.

Onyeka strikes early against his parent club

The opening goal arrived in the eighth minute. Onyeka found Petkov in a dangerous position and the Elversberg winger finished the move to put the hosts ahead.

The timing was significant. Onyeka was facing the club that owns his registration only weeks after Bayer Leverkusen extended his contract until June 2032 and sent him to Elversberg on a season-long loan. Leverkusen said the loan should give the midfielder the chance to establish himself at Bundesliga level.

Elversberg's attack then struck again one minute later. Campbell made it 2-0 in the ninth minute, leaving Leverkusen with a major problem before the game had settled. Onyeka continued to operate between midfield and attack as Elversberg looked to exploit the spaces around Leverkusen's midfield.

The hosts went 3-0 ahead one minute after the interval when Mokwa scored in the 46th minute. Petkov provided the assist for that goal, with Onyeka playing a key role in the buildup.

Leverkusen responded through Schick, who scored in the 77th minute, before substitute Kofane pulled another goal back late in the game. Elversberg survived the final stages to secure the three points. Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface did not make it off the bench for the visitors while Nathan Tella was unavailable due to injury.

The result was especially striking because Elversberg were playing their first Bundesliga match in club history. Their promotion followed a rapid rise through the German divisions, while Leverkusen arrived as the more established top-flight side.

Onyeka's own rise has also been quick. He spent last season on loan at VfL Bochum in the 2. Bundesliga and scored eight goals in 30 league appearances. He also began the new campaign with two goals from the bench in Elversberg's 3-1 DFB-Pokal win at MSV Duisburg on 22 August. He scored in the 79th and 90th minutes and was rated 8.6 by FotMob.

That means Onyeka has started his first senior campaign with Elversberg with three goal involvements across the club's first two competitive matches, including two goals and one assist.

Why the performance matters to Nigeria

Onyeka's latest performance comes at an important time for his international future. Born in Gummersbach, Germany, on 29 April 2007, Onyeka was raised in the Bayer Leverkusen academy after joining the club at seven. He is of Nigerian descent and has represented Germany at several youth levels.

The DFB awarded him the Fritz Walter Medal in gold at under-17 level in 2024, an award given to leading young German players. He also captained Germany at the 2026 UEFA Under-19 European Championship and was one of the key players in their run to the final. He had 14 goals in 13 Germany U19 appearances before the tournament.

That international record makes the Nigeria question more interesting. Nigeria have not yet seen Onyeka in a senior Germany shirt, while reports say Super Eagles coach Chelle sees the midfielder as an option for the team's playmaker role and has tried to make contact with his camp.

The report comes as Nigeria continue to search for more creativity in midfield. Alex Iwobi has carried much of the creative responsibility for the best part of the last decade, while Chelle has also given opportunities to younger players during his time as coach.

Onyeka would not solve every problem on his own, but his profile gives Chelle another option. He is left-footed, can play as an attacking midfielder and has also operated as a winger and centre-forward. His 2025-26 season at Bochum showed that he can contribute goals as well as link attacks.

His current loan also gives him something Nigeria's coaching staff will value and that is regular senior football in one of Europe's major leagues. Bayer Leverkusen have already made their view of his potential clear by extending his contract to 2032. The next step is now taking place at Elversberg, where he has been given an important attacking role.

After scoring twice against Duisburg and then assisting against Leverkusen, Onyeka has made a fast start. Chelle now has another performance to consider as Nigeria build towards their next competitive cycle.
