Nigeria's Super Eagles might have a new home other than the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo in the coming months.
This comes as the chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, confirmed that the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja will undergo a massive overhaul. Speaking at an event on Wednesday, Dikko outlined an ambitious plan to deliver a world-class venue.
”We have already procured all the contracts and awarded all the projects. We have brought in the best companies in the world that we know,” Dikko said.
“The same people who did the pitches at the San Siro and the Santiago Bernabéu are the ones handling the Abuja pitch. The reason it is taking time is that they took samples of the water and sand to Europe for testing to make sure the grass we install is the absolute best.”

He continued: “Our target is to put in the best pitch in Africa. It is costing us millions of dollars to achieve that. It is not just the pitch; we are completely rebuilding the tracks and the dressing rooms.
”We are awarding contracts for two new training pitches and a new media centre. We are also working to fix the hostel in Abuja to turn it into a four-star facility where the team can lodge comfortably without distractions.
”Between now and March next year, ahead of the upcoming fixtures, hopefully, these facilities will be ready. We are revamping the entire stadium.”
Dikko also revealed that the initiative goes beyond the nation's capital, with widespread state collaborations underway:
”It is not only Abuja. We are working with the Borno State government to get their stadium operational. Kaduna is coming on board, and we are working with the Oyo State government on Ibadan. It is almost the same thing with the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu. By the middle to the end of next year, we should have five to eight stadiums capable of hosting international matches.”

Can the Abuja Stadium Be Fixed in Time for the Super Eagles?
In reality, there is no desperate rush to get the National Stadium in Abuja ready, given that Uyo has served as the Super Eagles' dependable base in recent years. Still, having viable alternatives — especially a top venue in the federal capital — remains a welcome prospect.

However, the major hurdle lies in execution. The NSC Chairman pointed to a timeline aiming for completion by March next year. Considering the vast scope of work outlined and the fact that physical groundwork is yet to kick off, delivering a full overhaul in such a window appears very tight.
Past experiences with government-led infrastructure drives also fuel skepticism. Bureaucracy and administrative bottlenecks often delay public sports projects in Nigeria, and fans have heard promises of stadium renovations go unfulfilled before.
Do the Super Eagles Need to Leave Uyo?
Uyo has provided stability for the Super Eagles, serving as the known home ground for crucial qualifiers. Even so, relying on a single venue across the entire federation leaves the team vulnerable.

There have also been occasional complaints regarding the pitch condition at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, which has at times been cited among the reasons for sluggish performances.
Providing a truly elite surface in Abuja, alongside other revamped arenas across the country, would ensure the team competes in optimal conditions and has genuine tactical flexibility depending on the fixture. It would also allow fans from all over the country to gain access to watch the Super Eagles.
For now, the Super Eagles will continue to rely on the Godswill Akpabio Stadium while stakeholders wait to see if the sports commission can beat the odds and deliver the transformed Abuja facility as promised.
