Former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju has opened up on how he came close to making history with Real Madrid, only for injury to deny him the chance, Soccernet.ng reports.
Adepoju, who played for the club’s reserve side, Castilla, in the early 1990s, said he was on the verge of breaking into the senior team during the 1992 season.
At the time, he was impressing with strong performances and goals from midfield. His opportunity came when Madrid’s star striker Hugo Sánchez picked up an injury.
Speaking about that moment, Adepoju said: “I was in Real Madrid’s second team, Castilla, and in 1992, during the season, Hugo Sánchez was injured, and they wanted me to come into the team.”
However, strict rules in Spanish football at the time made things complicated. Clubs were only allowed a limited number of foreign players, and Madrid had already filled their quota with top names like Sánchez, Gheorghe Hagi, Robert Prosinečki, and Ricardo Rocha.
Adepoju explained how the club still tried to find a way to bring him in.
“They could only have four foreigners signed in the team, and they already had four… When Hugo Sánchez had an injury, they wanted to bring me to substitute so that I could play until the end of the season.”
But just as the door opened, misfortune struck.
“But unfortunately, in the league that I played for the second team, I went to have a shoulder injury. So that was how I couldn’t get into the team.”
That moment proved decisive. A new coach arrived the following season, and Adepoju was no longer in the plans. He eventually left the club, missing what would have been a historic breakthrough. Adepoju would have become the first Nigerian player to feature for Real Madrid.
Reflecting on how things might have been different in today’s game, he added: “Assuming it is now that everybody could play, right from all the times I was scoring goals in the second team, I would have been in the first team.”

Although he missed out on making history at Madrid, Adepoju still built a career many Nigerian players admire.
His rise began at the 1989 FIFA World Youth Championship in Saudi Arabia — a tournament remembered for Nigeria’s dramatic comeback against the Soviet Union, often called the “Dammam Miracle.”
Looking back, Adepoju said: “Saudi '89 gave me my break.”
From there, he became a key figure for the Super Eagles during their golden era in the 1990s. Known as “The Headmaster” for his strength in the air, he was a powerful and intelligent midfielder.
He played a major role when Nigeria won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and also represented the country at multiple editions of the FIFA World Cup.
One of his most famous moments came at the 1998 World Cup in France, where he scored a crucial header against Spain in a famous 3-2 victory. In total, Adepoju earned 48 caps and scored six goals for Nigeria, becoming one of the most reliable midfielders of his generation.
At club level, he enjoyed a long spell in Spain, playing for sides like Racing Santander and Real Sociedad, where he built a reputation for consistency and leadership.
Even after retirement, Adepoju has remained active in football, working to promote the Spanish league in Nigeria and supporting the development of the game.
To this day, no Nigerian international has played a competitive match for Real Madrid’s senior side, a record Adepoju came closer than anyone to breaking.
