Super Eagles defender Igoh Ogbu has offered a timely financial lifeline to a struggling Nigeria-based footballer, stepping in with a donation that could help save a career, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Slavia Prague centreback made a voluntary contribution of two million naira to support Abraham Somtochukwu, who has been battling a serious knee injury. The young player had spent weeks appealing for help on social media, sharing his situation widely on platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

Somtochukwu had suffered an anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus injury earlier in the year, a condition that has kept him away from football and severely affected his mobility. As the weeks passed, his condition worsened, and his chances of returning to the pitch began to fade without urgent surgery.
In his appeal, the player explained how the injury had already cost him opportunities to travel abroad for trials, with interested clubs and agents forced to wait while his recovery remained uncertain. He had managed to raise 1.5 million naira through support from family, friends and well-wishers online, but he was still short of the amount needed to undergo surgery.

That changed when Ogbu became aware of the situation. On Friday, 20 March 2026, the Super Eagles defender was tagged in a fundraising video. Shortly afterwards, he stepped in with a donation of two million naira, pushing the total amount raised close to the required target and offering renewed hope to the injured player.
Who is Igoh Ogbu?
Ogbu’s gesture carries extra meaning given his own journey in football. Before rising to the international stage, he began his career in Nigeria with Gombe United, working his way up through determination and consistent performances.

His move to Europe came in 2018 when he joined Rosenborg BK. Loan spells followed as he continued to develop, eventually earning a permanent switch to Sogndal. His steady progress did not go unnoticed, and in 2021 he signed for Lillestrøm SK, where he made his top-flight debut in the Norwegian league.
By 2023, Ogbu had taken another big step, joining SK Slavia Prague, one of the top clubs in the Czech Republic. His performances there helped cement his reputation as a reliable defender, leading to a contract extension that will keep him at the club until 2027.

On the international stage, Ogbu has also grown steadily. After representing Nigeria at youth level, including the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations and the FIFA U-20 World Cup, he earned a call-up to the senior national team. He was part of Nigeria’s squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where the Super Eagles finished third.
