Why Atletico Madrid are rushing Ademola Lookman into Simeone’s plans

Atletico Madrid have moved quickly and deliberately to ensure Ademola Lookman is ready for Thursday’s Copa del Rey quarter-final against Real Betis, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Spanish giants are reorganising schedules and routines to accelerate Lookman's introduction, according to Marca.

The Nigerian forward arrived in Madrid on Sunday and, rather than being eased in gradually, will be thrown straight into Diego Simeone’s working environment. Once his medical examination is completed and contractual formalities finalised, Lookman will immediately report for first-team training.

In a clear signal of intent, Atlético have pushed back Monday’s training session to 4:00pm, a decision taken specifically to guarantee Lookman’s presence from the outset. Simeone wants the winger embedded with the group as quickly as possible, believing the upcoming Betis tie offers an immediate opportunity to deploy his new attacking option.

Lookman is expected to go through what has been described internally as an ‘express adaptation', with the emphasis on tactical understanding rather than physical conditioning. Having remained in competitive rhythm at Atalanta, the focus will be on introducing him to Atlético’s pressing demands, positional discipline and attacking patterns.

The aim is to have Lookman available, both physically and tactically, for Thursday night.

Atlético’s urgency reflects how central Lookman has become to their winter strategy. After protracted negotiations, the Madrid club finalised an agreement with Atalanta for a fee in the region of €40m, fending off interest from Fenerbahce to secure the 28-year-old’s signature.

Lookman is expected to sign a contract running until 2030, before touring the Metropolitano and taking part in his first session under Simeone. There will be little time for ceremony. The coaching staff want swift clarity on how he fits into their attacking rotation ahead of a congested run of fixtures.

The Super Eagles star arrives with an established European pedigree. His time in Bergamo transformed him into one of Serie A’s most decisive forwards, producing 55 goals and 27 assists across three and a half seasons.
