Super Eagles tickets: ₦1,000 for Iwobi, Bassey and Lookman, free in Bissau—the wild AFCON economics

When Super Eagles of Nigeria beat Madagascar 2-1 at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo to open their AFCON 2027 qualifying campaign, fans in the stands paid as little as ₦1,000 for a regular ticket and ₦3,000 for VIP to watch a squad featuring Premier League and Serie A regulars.

For Tuesday's second qualifier in Bissau, the gates are expected to be thrown open entirely, free of charge. This reminds us of just how differently football is priced depending on where—and for whom—it's being played.

Super Eagles tickets: What Uyo cost, and who was on the pitch

At ₦1,000 for a regular seat, fans watching the Super Eagles beat Madagascar were paying to watch players who, week to week, turn out for some of Europe's biggest leagues. Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi are both Premier League regulars at Fulham, while Taiwo Awoniyi lines up for Coventry City, back in the Premier League this season following his summer move from Nottingham Forest.

Samuel Chukwueze plays his club football at AC Milan in Serie A, alongside Ademola Lookman at Atletico Madrid, and also the 2024 CAF African Footballer of the Year. Akor Adams as well, who joined Venezia from Sevilla over the summer.

What the same players cost to watch at club level

Comparing Naira to Pound or Euro prices isn't perfectly like-for-like—currency, cost of living, and league economics all differ—but it's a useful illustration of the gap. Based on published 2026/27 season pricing:

AFCON economics: ₦1,000 in Uyo, free in Bissau

The contrast doesn't stop there. For the return leg of this qualifying window, Nigeria travel to Bissau to face Guinea-Bissau, and—unlike the ticketed gate in Uyo—the match is expected to have open, free entry for fans.

Speaking to Soccernet.ng in Bissau, Andrew Randa, of NFF Media, said the plan is for fans to get in without paying at all:

“I do not know how it would look like, but I spoke to the press officer of the [Guinea-Bissau FA], and he said usually they throw the gates open for their fans to come in. So I assume it's going to be open gates.” Based on what he was told, “the tickets are not going to be sold. The gates will be open free.”

That's not without risk, Randa cautioned, recalling the crowd scenes from Nigeria's last visit to the venue:

“I hope they're able to control the crowd, because the last time I was here it was really terrible—crowd control after the game especially. There were a lot of people inside the stadium and a lot outside it, so getting back to town after the game was a big deal for the Nigerian contingent… I just hope that even with open gates, the security measures in place are good enough to prevent any stampede or security breach.”

In a nutshell, ticketing for AFCON qualifiers varies wildly from host to host, shaped by local infrastructure, demand, and federation policy countering any fixed pricing structure across the competition.

Whatever the price on the gate, though, the football on offer is the same. A Super Eagles squad stacked with players who, on any given weekend, are turning out in front of paying crowds worth many multiples of what Nigerian fans are asked for at home.
