Reigning NPFL Champions Remo Stars saw their chances of a place in the CAF Champions League threatened after suffering a 5-1 defeat to Mamelodi Sundowns, Soccernet.ng reports.
In arguably the biggest game in the club's history against the one-time CAF Champions League winners, the Sky Blue stars fumbled at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta.
Sundowns' head coach, Miguel Casado, earlier revealed his players might be stretched for the away clash against the Nigerian side, but they quickly reached cruise control inside twelve minutes when Tashreeq Matthews broke the deadlock, belting the ball from 25 yards into the bottom corner

Striker Peter Shalulile scored the second goal for the South African side three minutes before half-time.

The second half started with some form of motivation from Daniel Ogunmodede's team as they looked to reduce the deficit, but all hopes of a comeback were gone when Miguel Reisinho scored for the Masawanda just after the hour mark.

Brazilian winger Arthur Sales scored the game's fourth goal, sending his shot into the top corner. The goalkeeper palmed his effort, but that wasn't enough to keep the ball from going in.

The NPFL champions pulled one back two minutes through Samson Olasupo, who came off the bench. The winger cut the ball onto his right foot before putting the ball through the Ronwen Hayden Williams‘ near post.
Tsiki Ntsabeleng added salt to the wounds of the Nigerian Champions, scoring the 5th goal for Sundowns with five minutes left on the clock.

The return leg of the two-legged tie will be played at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria on the 26th of October, but it is highly unlikely that there'll be any form of a comeback from Remo Stars.
