Six-time English Premier League Champions Chelsea have won just one of their last five games across all competitions, Soccernet.ng reports.

Enzo Maresca's side have also been on the receiving end of two red cards in consecutive Premier League games, and this has angered former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel.

The one-time AFCON winner has been vocal about the Blues' need for a new goalkeeper and more experienced hands to guide a relatively young team to glory.

Chelsea's most recent loss came last Saturday after they'd taken the lead against Brighton and Hove Albion. A reckless challenge from Trevor Chalobah saw the Englishman given his marching orders in the 53rd minute.

Danny Welbeck came off the bench to score a brace, while Maxim De Cuyper also joined in on the act as Fabian Hurzeler's men turned the game on its head.

Mikel states why Chelsea might go trophyless

The two-time UEFA Champions League winners are already seven points behind Liverpool in the league after just six games, and Mikel mentioned Chelsea might end up without a trophy this season if they continue playing in this manner.

“Inexperience. I think that's what you can conclude. Looking back at the game, it's another stupid, needless mistake,” the former Super Eagles captain said on the Obi One Podcast.

“We've said it so many times, we needed to strengthen at the back, a striker to tick the box, a centre-back and a goalkeeper. They'll probably look at it at the end of the season and realise they messed up.

“Our defence is nowhere good enough to win the Premier League. It's impossible. I'll say that again, we're not close with the backline that we have.

“Going forward, we can score goals, we can create chances, we're brilliant, but Colwill's absence is telling at the back. There's no one to cover for him because of his injury.

“We're so weak in that position, and now, Chalobah is set to miss the game against Liverpool. We're not in a good place. Strikers win you games, and defenders win you titles.

“We will struggle. Once we go down to ten men, there's not much you can do again. Eight points from six games. We've given away too many red cards. Not good enough,” the one-time UEFA Europa League winner concluded.

Chelsea have now won two games, drawn two games and lost two games in the English Premier League this season. They have to pick themselves up in the coming weeks as tougher fixtures await.
