Former Super Eagles midfielder Mikel Obi has stressed that he does not see Chelsea winning the English Premier League this season, as they do not have a solid defender and a solid goalkeeper, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Blues have been making solid strides since Enzo Maresca took over at the helms of affairs last season.
They won the UEFA Conference League last season and shocked the whole world in July, after they went all the way to the FIFA Club World Cup final and defeated PSG to win it.
That feat, in addition to new signings like Joao Pedro and Estevao, raised expectations for the club this season. Many even tipped them to challenge for the Premier League title.
However, it has been a topsy-turvy start to the campaign for the London giants, who have picked eight points from five games this season. have won two, drawn two, and lost one this season.
What Mikel Obi Said About Chelsea's Chances Of Winning The Premier League
Former Super Eagles star Mikel Obi, who spent most of his career at Chelsea, believes that Chelsea's chances of winning the Premier League this season is very slim.
This is because he does not have confidence in the central defenders and the goalkeepers. He believes that Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen aren't good enough.
Mikel also believes that Tosin Adarabioyo, who is the first-choice center-back in Levi Colwill's absence, is not solid enough.
“I hope we can win the Premier League. With the current squad we have right now, going forward we're fantastic fantastic, we're creating chances,” Mikel said on his Obi One Podcast.
“It's good to see Cole Palmer again, back scoring goals, creating chances. But now, he's going to be out for a while.
“So for me, I just believe that the center back situation, even with Levi Colwill still there, I still believe we need another one.
“We need another one alongside him. We can see that Liverpool, Virgil Van Dijk and Konate, Manchester City Ruben have Ruben Diaz and Johh Stones, Gvardiol, Arsenal have Gabriel and Saliba.
“You need the spine of the team. You need a two top, center back, and I just feel like we need another top top center back alongside Levi Colwell.
“For me, once we are able to sort out that that position and get a goalkeeper, I think we will be challenging to win the Premier League.
“But right now, with the squad that we have the Premier League, it's tough to win. It's a marathon, it's not a sprint,” Mikel added.

Despite Mikel's comments, a lot could still change before the end of the campaign. Chelsea are currently seven points behind Liverpool, who sit at the summit, having won won all their games so far.
If coach Enzo Maresca has all his players fit, Chelsea should be able to give a hot pursuit for the title.
