Victor Osimhen’s influence at Galatasaray is already beginning to stretch beyond the pitch as the Nigerian striker has taken on a behind-the-scenes role in helping the Turkish champions shape their squad for the new season, Soccernet.ng reports.

According to reports in Turkey, Osimhen personally phoned Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji to encourage him to make the switch to Istanbul.

Former Borussia Dortmund star Akanji has Nigerian roots but he plays international football for European giants Switzerland.

Super Eagles forward Osimhen, who could also become a movie star in Turkey, is in favour of Akanji joining Galatasaray.

The 30-year-old centre-back, who has been a reliable figure under Pep Guardiola, is now understood to be considering his options with Galatasaray pushing hard to secure his services before the transfer window closes.

Galatasaray, who will be competing in the UEFA Champions League after reclaiming the Turkish Super Lig title, have already landed Leroy Sané alongside Osimhen in what has been a statement summer.

But the Lions remain keen to reinforce their defence, particularly with potential departures of Victor Nelsson and Carlos Cuesta looming. Akanji, valued at around €28m, has emerged as their prime target.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Galatasaray have made an official approach to Manchester City, with negotiations also involving Akanji’s representatives. His agent is expected in Istanbul this week as discussions continue over personal terms.

Akanji has been a consistent presence for City since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, making more than 130 appearances and featuring in their treble-winning campaign. However, competition in defence is fierce, with John Stones, Rúben Dias and Abdukodir Khusanov all ahead in Guardiola’s rotation.

His omission from City’s 4-0 win over Wolves last weekend could be a pointer to his role for the Manchester-based club this campaign.

Galatasaray are keen to bolster a defence line that shipped 31 goals in 36 Super Lig games last season.

Interestingly, the Super Lig champions are yet to concede a goal after two matches this term, registering similar 3-0 wins against Gaziantep and Fatih Karagümrük.
