The Nigeria international may have unknowingly played a part in OGC Nice's decision to snub the exciting Ghanaian attacker

OGC Nice have pulled out of a proposed deal for Ghanaian forward Ransford Königsdörffer due to medical concerns after drawing a direct link to their experience with Nigerian striker Terem Moffi.

The move for Königsdörffer, who was on the brink of joining from Hamburger SV, collapsed at the final hurdle after medical checks flagged a potential issue with his left knee.

The 23-year-old was expected to complete a switch to the French Riviera side, but the club withdrew late in the process, citing caution.

This decision is understood to have been heavily influenced by Nice's ill-fated handling of Moffi's transfer, according to German news outlet Sport.

When Moffi joined from Lorient in January 2023, first on loan before a €22.5 million permanent deal that summer, Nice’s medical team reportedly detected a knee issue. However, the club opted to proceed with the signing regardless.

That gamble proved costly. In August 2024, Moffi suffered a cruciate ligament injury that sidelined him for six months. He managed just one goal after returning in February 2025, such was the long-term impact of the injury.

Although Moffi recently showed signs of recovery, scoring in a pre-season friendly against Sheffield United, his long absence remains a sore spot for Nice. The club now appears unwilling to repeat the same mistake.

Despite Königsdörffer’s impressive injury record at HSV, having missed only two games in three seasons, the flagged knee issue raised enough red flags. HSV board member Stefan Kuntz expressed surprise at the failed transfer even as he noted the player’s consistent availability and medical supervision under UKE Athleticum.

Königsdörffer, who had two knee injuries earlier in his youth career, has since maintained good fitness levels, even featuring with strapping on his left knee without complications.

HSV’s sporting director Claus Costa confirmed the club would gladly retain him, praising his contributions to their Bundesliga promotion campaign, where he recorded 17 goal involvements.

OGC Nice finished fourth in the French Ligue 1 last term and the the club will battle Porgyese giants Benfica in a UEFA Champions League qualifier on Wednesday.
