Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel made his competitive debut for Birmingham City against Ipswich Town on Friday

Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel was named the Man of the Match in Birmingham City's opening game of the English Championship against Ipswich Town on Friday, Soccernet.ng reports.

Osayi-Samuel joined the Blues in a free transfer this summer after refusing to extend his contract at Turkish Super Lig club Fenerbahce.

He has been quite active in pre-season, and coach Chris Davies named him in the starting eleven for their tricky opener against Ipswich Town.

Birmingham City dominated the early exchanges and looked like the better side in the first half, but they failed to score.

However, the game changed in the second half. Birmingham's dominance eventually yielded fruits just ten minutes into the second half, with Jay Stansfield scoring the opener.

He got on the end of a rebound after Kyogo Furuhashi's strike crashed against the woodwork. And he simply struck the ball into an empty net.

It looked like the game was headed for a 1-0 win. But Birmingham City fumbled at the death. Attacker Lyndon Dykes, who replaced Stansfield, conceded a penalty after handling the ball in the 5th minute of stoppage.

Ipswich star George Hirst took charge of the situation and smoothly converted his spot-kick to make it 1-1. The game eventually ended that way.
