Victor Osimhen to Galatasaray: Is this the biggest transfer in Napoli’s history?

In what can only be described as the most captivating transfer saga of the summer, Victor Osimhen has completed his sensational move from Napoli to Galatasaray.

The Nigerian striker’s switch to the Turkish champions brings an end to a turbulent relationship with Napoli, while marking a seismic moment in both clubs' histories.

Osimhen's transfer, reportedly agreed at €75 million with an additional €5 million in performance-related bonuses, could rise to a staggering €80 million. This makes it the second-most expensive sale in Napoli’s long history. Only Gonzalo Higuain’s controversial €90 million move to Juventus in 2016 surpasses it.

This deal is not just eye-watering in terms of figures; it’s a complex financial masterstroke. Galatasaray will pay €40 million upfront, another €35 million in 12 months, and €5 million if Osimhen meets a set goal tally. Napoli will also receive 10% of any future resale fee.

As part of the agreement, Galatasaray is barred from selling Osimhen to any Italian club for the next two years, a clause that hints at Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis' determination to avoid another Higuain-type betrayal.

The Turkish giants have shattered their own financial ceiling for this move.

Prior to Osimhen, Galatasaray’s most expensive purchase was the €18 million acquisition of Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Sara from Norwich City in 2024. That figure had only just overtaken their long-standing €17 million deal for Jardel back in 2000.

On a national scale, this deal is unprecedented. No Turkish club has ever paid or received anything close to €80 million for a player.

The most expensive outgoing Turkish deal before this was Fenerbahce’s €30 million sale of Ferdi Kadıoğlu to Brighton in 2024, closely followed by Bayern’s €30 million swoop for Sacha Boey from Galatasaray.

As for the highest arrival fee in Turkey before now, that honour belonged to Besiktas, who agreed to pay €25 million to sign Orkun Kökçü permanently from Benfica when his loan deal expires next year.

Now, Osimhen stands alone atop Turkish football’s financial summit.

From a personal standpoint, Osimhen’s move ends a rollercoaster Napoli chapter that began with his record-breaking €70 million arrival from Lille in 2020. He delivered Serie A glory in 2022/23 and etched his name into Neapolitan folklore, but tensions behind the scenes and contract wrangles turned the love story bitter.

For Galatasaray, Osimhen arrives not just as a marquee signing but as the new face of Turkish football’s global ambitions.
