Erik Ten Hag sanctions sale of Super Eagles attacker, prepares replacement

Former Manchester United head coach, Erik Ten Hag, has called for the sale of Super Eagles and Bayer 04 Leverkusen striker, Victor Okoh Boniface, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 24-year-old had a stellar debut season with Die Werkself, scoring 21 goals and providing nine assists in 34 games across all competitions while winning the league title and the DFB Pokal under Xabi Alonso.

However, Boniface's form dipped in the just-concluded season as he scored just 11 goals in 27 outings for Leverkusen, largely due to injury. Ahead of the summer transfer window, it appears Leverkusen are trying to part ways with the Nigerian attacker.

With Xabi Alonso taking over the reins at Real Madrid, Leverkusen appointed Ten Hag to take the place of the Spanish tactician, and he's already made it clear that the Nigerian isn't a part of his plans at the Bay Arena.

As per German outlet, Bild, Patrik Schick is set to stay at Bayer Leverkusen this summer, opening the door for Boniface's departure.

Ten Hag has decided to make Schick his number one striker ahead of the 2025/2026 season, although the Czech striker was unhappy with his playing time towards the end of last season and attempted to force his way out of the club.

The 29-year-old will now be the undisputed starter at Bay Arena, with Cameroonian striker – Christian Kofane poised to be the back-up, upon the completion of his deal from Albacete for a fee of €5m.

Now third-choice, Boniface is expected to exit the club for a fee of around €50m and has attracted interest in the Premier League from Newcastle, although he's previously mentioned he's not keen on a move to England; rather, he favours a transfer to the Spanish La Liga.
