Barcelona, Fiorentina stars shine as Spain defeat Nigeria 2-0

Nigeria's Super Falconets began their 2026 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup campaign with a disappointing 2-0 defeat to 2022 champions Spain on Monday, Soccernet.ng reports.

Moses Aduku's side arrived at the Arena Sosnowiec knowing they faced one of the tournament favourites, and as expected, Nigeria were unable to match Spain's control and technical quality for long periods of the encounter. The Spanish side is mainly comprised of players from Barcelona, and Real Madrid, and their quality showed.

Spain's Early Strike Set The Tone

Spain quickly established control of the game, using their passing game to force Nigeria into long periods without possession of the ball.

The European side eventually found the breakthrough after just 13 minutes through Marisa, who put Spain in the 13th minute. She got on the end of a fumbled low cross from Noemi Bejarano and simply poked the ball into the net to make it 1-0. It was a reward for Spain's early dominance and made Nigeria's already difficult task way more difficult.

The Super Falconets had an opportunity to level the scoring just three minutes later, after Folajomi Olabiyi was set up with a brilliant through pass. But being marked by two defenders, she rushed the opportunity and fired the ball straight at the goalkeeper Laia Lopez. But from then, chances became a rare commodity for the Super Falconets.

Spain continued to threaten and eventually doubled their advantage through Fiorentina attacker Alba Cerrato.

The forward, who came off the bench after half-time, finished a move to give Spain a 2-0 lead. She got the ball inside the area and beat goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma with a low shot at her near post. The Falconets goalkeeper had looked shaky all game, and it was just a testament of how poor she looked.

Spain completed 585 passes on the day, compared to the Falconets' inferior 113, a sign of the Europeans' dominance. The game eventually ended 2-0 to Spain.

Falconets Now Face Pressure

Nigeria cannot afford to dwell on the defeat for too long. Their next Group F fixture is against China on September 10, before they face New Caledonia three days later.

The format gives the Falconets some room for recovery, with the top two teams in each group advancing to the knockout stage alongside the four best third-placed teams.

But the margin for error has already narrowed. A victory against China would put the Falconets back in contention for a place in the last 16, while another defeat could leave Aduku's side needing a near-perfect final match against New Caledonia.
