Loved in Istanbul, wanted in England: Is Victor Osimhen about to make the biggest mistake of his career?

Victor Osimhen

Victor Osimhen has never been more adored.

In Turkey, he’s a walking phenomenon — Galatasaray’s unstoppable goal machine, a record-breaker, a cup-winner, a fan favourite.

But amid the adulation and fireworks, a bigger question now looms: is the Nigerian striker about to make a wrong decision?

What was supposed to be a temporary stopover in Istanbul, after a bitter fallout with Napoli and a collapsed move to Chelsea, is now in danger of becoming a longer-term affair.

Osimhen came to Galatasaray with one clear ambition — revive his form, restore his value, and make that long-awaited leap to the Premier League.

And in one electric season, he did just that: 35 goals in all competitions, a domestic double, and a legacy etched into Turkish football history.

Goal #26.

– what an elite run from Osimhen
– runs across, over and eventually in-behind the opponent
– creates the easy passing lane for his teammate & widens his perception and image

He even became the highest-scoring foreign player in a single Super Lig season, surpassing Brazilian great Mario Jardel.

The love has been overwhelming. Fans launched a viral “Stay with us, Osimhen” campaign that generated over a million tweets.

Galatasaray have serenaded him with chants, club legends have called him “a saviour”, and coach Okan Buruk insists: “He’s achieving incredible success, not just on the pitch, but in the way he lifts everyone around him.”

As expected, the big English clubs are back on the queue for Osimhen.

So why is a Premier League dream now under threat?

It boils down to finance and perhaps, sentiment.

Chelsea, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Liverpool are all still interested, but none are currently willing to meet Osimhen’s €15m-a-year salary demands or pay Napoli’s €75m price tag.

Galatasaray, smelling an opportunity, have moved swiftly. They have secured sponsorship backing, agreed to pay the transfer fee in instalments, and offered Osimhen a staggering €12m-a-year contract plus a share of any future sale profits.

It’s tempting. For a player who’s experienced turbulence in Italy and rejection in England, the affection in Turkey must feel like home.

Even Osimhen himself admitted, “There’s a passion here I’ve never seen before. I need to make a big decision.”

But here’s the problem: he’s won it all in Turkey: league title, cup, golden boot, and staying could mean plateauing.

Galatasaray may offer Champions League football next season, but they aren’t contenders. There’s little to suggest they can go deep in Europe.

For a 26-year-old forward in his prime, Osimhen risks stagnating in a league where the next challenge is simply repeating what he’s already done. That’s rarely enough to fuel the hunger of a striker with ambitions to be among the world’s elite.

In truth, this next step is about timing. Wait too long, and the opportunity may pass. As clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea look elsewhere, as age catches up, as newer stars emerge, the window could quietly shut. The likes of Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, Lamine Yamal, and Erling Haaland have already planted flags in Europe's biggest leagues. Osimhen risks being left behind.

Even former players recognise the weight of the moment. Turkish legend Nihat Kahveci put it bluntly:

“He will not throw a coin when choosing his team… but he must be affected by the love here. Still, the decision has to be right.”

And the right decision may not be the emotional one.

Premier League football is Osimhen’s dream.

The exposure, competition, and prestige it offers is unmatched. If salary demands are the stumbling block, perhaps compromise is needed. After all, the rewards — both financially and professionally — will follow if he delivers on the big stage.

Should he remain at Galatasaray beyond the summer, it won’t just be a missed opportunity. It could be the moment he trades a starring role on Europe’s biggest platform for comfort and acclaim in a smaller arena.

Osimhen is a star. But stars need to shine where the world can see them. And right now, the brightest lights are in England.
