Nigeria's Super Falcons have been forced to cancel the first leg of their highly anticipated international friendlies against Cameroon on Saturday following the delayed arrival of the Indomitable Lionesses, Soccernet.ng reports.

The development was announced by the Nigeria Football Federation via the Super Falcons' official X account on Friday night.

The match, initially scheduled to take place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, was the first of a two-legged friendly designed to kickstart Nigeria’s preparations for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

However, Cameroon's team arrived late on Friday, leaving no time for adequate recovery or completion of necessary pre-match protocols. Organisers cited logistical challenges and travel hitches as the reason behind the disruption.

The abrupt cancellation means that only one fixture will now be played between the two West African powerhouses.

That match, originally set for Tuesday, June 3, at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, has now been rescheduled to Monday, June 2.

The friendly was expected to mark Nigeria’s return to international action after their narrow 2-1 loss to France in a November 2024 outing.

With nine WAFCON titles and a perfect record of reaching every semi-final since the tournament’s inception in 1991, the Super Falcons remain Africa’s most decorated women’s team.

The rescheduled match takes on extra significance as the Falcons prepare to battle Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana in Group B of the 2024 WAFCON, now set to take place from July 5 to 26, 2025, in Morocco.
