Despite intentions to stay, Plymouth part ways with Nigerian star signed by Rooney

EFL Championship side, Plymouth Argyle, have parted ways with Nigerian forward, Muhammed Tijani after their relegation to Sky Bet League One was confirmed, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 24-year-old striker joined Plymouth at the start of the season, on loan from Czech side, Slavia Prague. At the time, Wayne Rooney was still in charge of the Pilgrims before he was fired after a succession of poor results.

Injuries marred Tinaji's spell with Plymouth, as he was able to start just four of their 46 games, scoring two goals and providing one assist, and now he returns to his parent club after a failed loan stint.

In an official statement on the club's website, they confirmed they won't be retaining the Nigerian's services, despite his keeness to stay at the club.

Michael Obafemi, Tymoteusz Puchacz, Darko Gyabi, Nikola Katic and Muhamed Tijani have returned to their parent clubs.

Thanks for your efforts, lads, and good luck for the future.

Plymouth's head coach, Miron Muslic, previously revealed his side were working on securing Tijani permanently from Slavia Prague, but following an official statement, it appears the decision won't be happening.

“We are doing our jobs in the background. I'm so happy for Tijani, he could finally show himself as a starter. He's a threat inside the box, and if it's too transitional, he cannot show his best qualities, but I think he did show his value the last time as a starter.

“There are clearly considerations to continue working with Tijani. Of course, 100 per cent, we want him to be here with us next season,” the former Cercle Brugge coach said in quotes revealed by Soccernet.ng.

In response, Tijani has also admitted he wants to stay with Plymouth Argyle, but on the condition that they do not relegate to the Sky Bet League One.

“Yes, I am interested. I wouldn’t say it depends on staying up, but if we do stay in the Championship, I’m very interested,” the 24-year-old said as previously reported by Soccernet.ng.

Plymouth's relegation means the club will incur financial losses and in turn, lead to the release of some players to keep the books balanced.
