Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has parted ways with Plymouth Argyle after seven months in charge of the club, Soccernet.ng reports.

During his tenure, Muhamed Tijani, on loan from Czech side Slavia Prague, had emerged as a key figure in the attack for the former Everton forward. However, a setback due to injury ultimately proved to be one of the factors that couldn’t help save Rooney’s job.

The 24-year-old picked up a knock during training ahead of Plymouth’s clash with Burnley, which ended in a 1-0 defeat to the home side.

Rooney’s team struggled consistently throughout the season and found themselves stuck at the bottom of the league, although they were just one point away from safety going into Boxing Day.

After heavy losses, including a 4-0 defeat to Coventry and a 2-0 loss to Oxford United, Plymouth remained rooted to the bottom of the table. The club had no choice but to part ways with Rooney.

Part of the statement reads: “Plymouth Argyle can confirm that the club and Head Coach Wayne Rooney have mutually agreed to part ways with immediate effect.

“Departing the club with Rooney will be Assistant Head Coach Mike Phelan and First Team Coach Simon Ireland.

“First Team Coach Kevin Nancekivell and Club Captain Joe Edwards will lead the team for our Sky Bet Championship match against Bristol City on New Year’s Day. Daryl Flahavan will continue as Goalkeeping Coach.

“We would like to thank Wayne and his team for all their efforts and wish them well for the future.”

It is suggested that both Tijani, alongside Burnley loanee Michael Obafemi, had much to prove under the manager. However, due to their injuries, they were unable to help salvage his position.
