Swiss Super League side FC Basel have announced the signing of Nigerian forward Philip Otele on loan from UAE Pro League club Al Wahda, Soccernet.ng reports.
The 25-year-old attacker, who will don the number 7 shirt, joins on a deal that includes a €3 million purchase option, giving Basel flexibility to secure his services permanently.

Pleased with the capture of Otele, FC Basel sporting director Daniel Stucki said:
“Philip Otele is a very explosive player who brings another interesting element to our offensive game with his physique.
“Thanks to his age, he has already gained a lot of experience and is a great alternative for us on the wing or in attack. We are very happy that this good opportunity has now presented itself and that we have been able to win him for FCB.”
Otele himself expressed delight at the move:
“I am delighted that I was able to sign with FC Basel today. The club is internationally known for its successes and, both in the past and today, top players who have had world-class careers have played here.
“This is a great opportunity for me personally and I am very happy that I can join this club today. With my style of play, I try to give the team an unpredictable element in attack. I am fast and versatile in attack.”
Basel scouts had been tracking Otele since last summer, but a move only materialised this January.
The Nigerian forward initially joined Al Wahda in 2024 after a prolific season with CFR Cluj in Romania, where he netted 18 goals and provided 8 assists in 45 games.
However, his stint in the UAE has been less fruitful, failing to score or assist in 13 appearances.
Otele’s career has also taken him to UTA Arad in Romania, Kauno Žalgiris in Lithuania, and Wolviston FC. Despite recent struggles, Basel hopes his explosive pace, athleticism, and scoring instincts will bolster their attack.
The agreement with Al Wahda includes a sell-on clause, allowing the Emirati club a percentage of any future transfer fee should the deal be made permanent.
Otele passed his medical on Tuesday and is now set to revive his career in Switzerland.
