Former Dutch Eredivisie champions Ajax FC could sell Super Eagles-eligible star Chuba Akpom to make way the signing of Wout Weghorst this summer, Soccernet.ng reports.
Ajax signed Akpom for €12.3 million from English Championship club Middlebrough last summer after an impressive campaign for the club that saw him register 28 goals and two assists in 40 appearances.
However, the 28-year-old forward had a topsy-turvy campaign despite the fanfare surrounding his arrival, as they even handed him the historical number 10 shirt.
Akpom played under two coaches last season, and so, he struggled to adapt. The Nigerian forward made 25 appearances in the Eredivisie and got eleven goals and three assists.
Due to his struggles last season, there have been talks that Akpom will leave Ajax, amid links with Lens and some Premier League clubs. But nothing concrete has emerge yet.
Meanwhile, according to Ajaxshowtime, Ajax are seriously interested in former Manchester United star Weghorst, who is currently at Hoffenheim.
But in order to do that, the Godenzonen would have to let go of some players in their frontline. Owing to Akpom’s struggles at the club, Ajax could sell him in the summer.
The former Arsenal player would fetch them good money, as he is valued at €12 million according to Transfermarkt.
Akpom was born in England and played for their youth teams. But he never got called up to the senior team. He has since switched his allegiances to Nigeria, but he has not been called up to the Super Eagles squad.
