Coventry City manager Frank Lampard is keen to strengthen his squad as they push for promotion to the Premier League. Scoccernet.ng reports.

Following this, Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has emerged as a transfer target for the Championship club.

The 28-year-old Brentford star, who recently impressed at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, has publicly stated his desire to one day play for Manchester United, which adds a subplot to his potential move.

Coventry are reported to be in advanced talks with Brentford over a deal for Onyeka, with both a loan and a permanent transfer option reportedly discussed.

The Championship leaders are looking to bolster their midfield as they aim to maintain their title challenge and secure automatic promotion.

Coventry Leading the Race for Frank Onyeka

According to Sky Sports News, Coventry appear to be leading several clubs interested in Onyeka. Championship rivals Birmingham City and Sheffield United are also keen on the Nigeria international, while Spanish side Valencia were the first to make initial contact with Brentford earlier in the window.

Onyeka’s contract with Brentford has just over 15 months remaining, which could facilitate a move before the transfer deadline.

His recent form for Nigeria at AFCON, where he played in four of six matches, including the semi-final loss to Morocco, has increased interest from clubs seeking a strong midfielder like him.

Onyeka’s Manchester United Ambition

Onyeka has been one of Nigeria’s standout performers at the tournament, despite not scoring. All through, he displayed the ability to control the middle of the park and break up opposition attacks, which has caught the attention of clubs across Europe.

Adding to the intrigue, Onyeka has publicly admitted he would love to play for Manchester United in the future.

“Yes of course, I want to play for Manchester United.” — Onyeka when asked by a fan about a potential move, in comments earlier reported by Soccernet.ng.

While a move to Old Trafford may be a long-term dream, Coventry and other clubs see an opportunity to secure his services immediately to boost their promotion ambitions.

Frank Lampard Eyes Championship Glory

Securing Onyeka would be a major statement of intent as Coventry aim to extend their three-point lead at the top of the Championship.

The former Chelsea midfielder-turned-manager is reportedly impressed by Onyeka’s physical presence and international experience, all of which could play a key role in Coventry’s pursuit of Premier League football.

In the following days, all eyes will be on Brentford’s decision and whether Onyeka will make the move to England’s Championship to continue his AFCON form in club football.
