Newcastle United enter into race for newly promoted Super Eagles midfielder

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United have become the latest club to pick interest in Super Eagles and Leicester City midfielder, Wilfred Ndidi, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 27-year-old was an integral member of the Leicester City squad as the Foxes reclaimed their top-flight status last weekend despite missing almost two months due to an injury.

The contract of the former Genk man expires in the summer and Enzo Maresca has been mute when questioned about a possible extension for Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho.

With an exit looming, Sevilla, Fenerbahçe, Tottenham Hotspur and Galatasaray have been monitoring the contract situation of Super Eagles midfielder.

According to Spanish outlet, Fichajes, West Ham, Newcastle and Aston Villa have expressed interest in signing the player as a free agent in the coming weeks.

Both Newcastle United and Aston Villa are looking to bolster their respective facilities, and Ndidi is listed as an attractive option for both.

The Magpies had their campaign blighted by injuries this season, and Sandro Tonali’s suspension gave Eddie Howe fewer options to work with in midfield, striking his hunger to have an extra midfielder in Ndidi.

Newcastle will miss out on next season’s UEFA Champions League, but Eddie Howe is determined to maintain his team’s competitiveness and secure a place in European competitions for the second consecutive season. With players such as Tosin Adarabioyo and Lloyd Kelly also on the Magpies’ target list, the club is willing to explore all available options, including players who would arrive as free agents.

Soccernet.ng earlier reported that the 53-time capped Nigerian player has set his sights on playing for a club within the Premier League top six. Any offer in England outside of that will not be considered by Ndidi, instead, he’ll look to move away from England,  a nation where he has been plying his trade since 2017.

Newcastle are currently 7th on the English Premier League table and with four games left to play, Unai Emery’s Aston Villa have the advantage in the race to sign Ndidi as they sit comfortably in 4th.
