Peseiro has spent almost two years in charge of the Super Eagles, but Gara-Gombe has not been impressed
Former Gombe United chairman Ahmed Gara-Gombe has stated that appointing Portuguese tactician Jose Peseiro as coach is one of the biggest mistakes the NFF has ever made, Soccernet.ng reports.
Nigeria will be looking to claim a fourth African crown in the Ivory Coast when they battle against 23 other African nations later this month.
The last time the Super Eagles were champions of Africa was in 2013, under the tutelage of the late Stephen Keshi. However, a lot has changed since then, and the only surviving member of that team is Ahmed Musa.
Peseiro will be looking to recreate such memories again, but a lot of fans and football pundits do not trust Peseiro because of his antecedents. The former Braga boss has struggled to win games, even against some of the smallest teams in Africa.
Ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations, former Gombe United chairman Gara-Gombe stated that he did not see Nigeria doing well because of the coach.
“In the first place, hiring Peseiro for the Super Eagles was one of the greatest mistakes we have ever made in the history of our football. Since he took over, what is the outcome?” Gara-Gombe told Channels TV.
“Nigeria does not have a pattern, a style of play, and we struggled to win games.
“Let us go and keep on trying our cut and paste strategy, our wobble and fumble strategy.”
Jose Peseiro’s contract will expire after the AFCON, and he will likely be let go if Nigeria does not do well.
