Super Eagles legend Jay-Jay Okocha has weighed in on the 2026 Ballon d'Or debate, sharing his thoughts on who deserves the award between Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe and the other contestants.
The 53-year-old described the race for football’s most prestigious individual award as more exciting than ever in an interview with French outlet Le Journal du Dimanche, speaking ahead of PSG’s UEFA Champions League meeting with Manchester City.
Kylian Mbappe, Harry Kane, Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal, and Michael Oliseh have been head and shoulders above every other player and are believed to be the frontrunners.

While Okocha acknowledged the strength of the competition, he believes Mbappe edges the other players because of his goalscoring achievements across the World Cup, Champions League and Spanish league.
Okocha weighs in on Mbappe vs Kane Ballon d’Or debate
Okocha admitted that the competition for this year’s award is intriguing, as several players are worthy of winning the award based on their individual performances.
“The suspense is more exciting than ever.
“There are around half a dozen contenders: Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappe, Lamine Yamal, the PSG players,” the former Super Eagles captain said in an interview with Le Journal du Dimanche.

Quizzed on who deserves to win, the Nigerian icon singled out Mbappe, pointing to the Real Madrid forward’s impressive goalscoring record.
“I think Mbappe would deserve it for having been the top scorer at the World Cup (10 goals), in the Champions League (15) and in the Spanish league (25),” he added.
Okocha’s argument centres on Mbappe’s ability to deliver across different competitions. His cited figures cover the biggest international tournament.

Kane, meanwhile, has also enjoyed an impressive spell with Bayern Munich and remains a major contender following his goalscoring exploits for club and country.
The former Tottenham Hotspur striker is chasing a historic achievement, as no Englishman has won the Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001.
Although Okocha did not dismiss Kane’s chances, his comments indicate that Mbappe’s scoring output across three major competitions makes the Frenchman his preferred candidate.
Meanwhile, Kane scored 70 goals and provided nine assists in 64 games for club and country, compared to Mbappe's 53 goals and 10 assists in 59 games for club and country.

Okocha reflects on his PSG years
The former Frankfurt midfielder also reflected on his time at PSG, where he played between 1998 and 2002 alongside several notable names, including Ronaldinho, Nicolas Anelka and Mikel Arteta.
Okocha admitted that failing to win a major trophy with the Parisian club remained frustrating, but he maintained that the team played attractive football during his spell.
“Yes, but we had played the most beautiful football in the French league,” Okocha said, speaking fondly of his former teammates and underlined his affection for the club.
Okocha praised the current PSG side under Luis Enrique, describing them as Europe’s best team in the past two years and expressing admiration for their 5-0 victory over Inter Milan in the 2025 Champions League final.

Lamine Yamal, Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe have spoken about their desire to win the award over the past few months.
While Kane admitted that the fact that he didn't win the World Cup or Champions League limits his chances, Yamal and Mbappe are confident that the individual quality they put on display in the 2025/2026 season is Ballon d'Or worthy.
The 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony is scheduled for October 26 in London and will be hosted at the Palladium Theatre.
