Akpom’s contract at Middlesbrough is set to expire at the end of next season, and Boro risk losing him for free
Former Eredivisie champions Ajax are interested in signing Nigeria striker Chuba Akpom from Middlesbrough this summer, Soccernet reports.
Akpom was the best striker in the English Championship last season after hauling in 28 goals for Middlesbrough. Unfortunately for him, his performance was not enough to help Boro gain promotion to the Premier League, and they failed to go past the first round of the promotion playoffs.
The 27-year-old goal-poacher is now in the final year of his contract, and there has been a lot of talk about his future.
Akpom has been linked to English top-flight teams like Everton, Crystal Palace, and Sheffield United. However, nothing concrete has emerged from those talks. Soccernet also reported earlier that Ligue 1 side Lens have sent Middlesbrough a bid of €8million.
According to Sport Witness, Eredivisie giants Ajax have not joined the race for the Arsenal Academy graduate. The Godenzonen are looking to rebuild with new coach Maurice Steijn, and Akpom is a viable option for them.
Ajax are known to be light spenders, and the Nigerian striker would come at a decent price for them as he is valued at €12million per Transfermarket.
In a recent interview, Akpom revealed that he wants to stay at Middlesbrough despite the numerous transfer links. However, Middlesbrough could sell if the right offer comes.
