Super Eagles centre-back Gabriel Osho will miss Cardiff City's next three Championship games after the club's appeal against his red card at Middlesbrough failed.
Osho was sent off in the 83rd minute of Cardiff's 2-2 draw at the Riverside Stadium on 17 October for a challenge on Middlesbrough's Will Lankshear, as Brit Brief reported. Cardiff had led 2-0 at half-time through Jack Moylan and Ollie Tanner.
Wales247 reports that the straight red brings a three-match ban, ruling Osho out of the games against Birmingham City, Wolves and West Ham.
What Barry-Murphy said
Cardiff manager Brian Barry-Murphy confirmed the appeal had been unsuccessful, as All Nigeria Soccer reported from his press conference. He said the club went ahead because of belief in its case.
“We felt like we had a good case.”
Barry-Murphy said the feedback from the assessor was that Moylan had clipped his own heels, a view he disputed, saying the Cardiff player was pulled. He closed the matter with a short line.
“It is what it is.”
Analysis: a thin defence loses its centre-back
Cardiff have won two, drawn five and lost four of their 11 league games, according to Wales247, and the report says they sit in the bottom half. Dropping a defender for three games in that run leaves little room for error.
The report also notes Osho had already missed two games in August after hyperextending his knee in the 1-1 draw with Wrexham. Back-to-back absences would make this a stop-start autumn for a defender trying to keep his place in the Super Eagles conversation.
How the ban lines up with Nigeria's November qualifiers is not clear from the reports, because the dates of the three Cardiff games were not given in the sources checked. No Super Eagles squad for the Tanzania tie has been officially confirmed. For now, the ban is a Cardiff problem first.
The next test is Birmingham City, where Cardiff will have to find a way without him. Keep up with the Eagles' squad picture in our look at Nigeria’s AFCON 2027 route through Tanzania.
