Coventry vs Fulham: Preview and verdict as Iwobi looks to build on Fulham’s first league win

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi scored the winner in Fulham's first league victory of the season, and Fulham visit Coventry City on Saturday looking to repeat it.

Form guide

Fulham are on five points after seven games, Football In Nigeria reported, and out of the relegation zone. Fulham had 10 shots in the first half against Hull, and finished with 10 men after Ryan Sessegnon was sent off in stoppage time.

Iwobi told Fulham TV that the win was a long time coming, as quoted by SABC Sport. It was his first Premier League goal of the season.

Coventry City are 17th on six points from seven games, with two wins and five losses, per the Wikipedia season page as of 19 October. They lost 3-1 at Tottenham that day, after a 4-1 home win over Newcastle United on 12 October. Soccernet previewed the Tottenham game earlier this week, and Nigerian defender Ola Aina featured in our Nottingham Forest preview.

Nigerian connection: Iwobi's role

Iwobi is the Nigerian name in the Fulham side, and his goal against Hull was the difference between a first win and another stalemate. Whether he starts on Saturday has not been confirmed in any source we opened.

Analysis: What decides it

Both sides are near the bottom, so the match is about who handles pressure better. Fulham's first win may relieve some of it. Coventry's table position is better only on points: six against five.

Fulham's first-half shot count against Hull suggests they can create chances. If they stay in control of the game and keep eleven players on the pitch, the visitors have a platform. If Coventry's home form from the Newcastle win carries over, a draw looks as likely as a winner.

Verdict

Predicted score: Coventry City 1-1 Fulham
Likely scorer: Alex Iwobi

A draw suits the pattern of two teams short of confidence, with Iwobi the visitors' most likely source of a goal after his winner against Hull.
