Super Eagles star faces fresh change at Valencia after major decision

Super Eagles forward Umar Sadiq is set to work under a new head coach at Spanish side Valencia after the club parted ways with Carlos Corberan, Soccernet.ng reports.

Corberan took charge of Valencia in December 2024 after signing a three-year deal with the club. The Spaniard also had a previous connection with Valencia, having played for the club during the early stages of his career.

He was also the coach who brought Sadiq to Valencia, initially signing the Nigerian striker on loan in 2025 before the move was made permanent during the winter transfer window in 2026.

Corberan enjoyed a positive start to his time at the club, helping Valencia avoid relegation after taking over midway through the 2024/25 campaign. However, things have taken a turn for the worse this season, with Valencia struggling badly at the start of the new campaign.

The Spanish side have failed to win any of their opening five league matches, picking up just one point from a goalless draw against Celta Vigo on the opening day. They subsequently suffered heavy defeats against Deportivo La Coruna and Barcelona before another setback against Sevilla last weekend.

The poor start to the season has left Valencia bottom of the La Liga table, with just one point from five matches, and the defeat to Sevilla eventually brought an end to Corberan's time at the club.

Valencia confirmed his departure in a statement, while also revealing that changes would be made to the club's football and sporting structure.

“This decision reflects the club's intention to begin a new phase for the running of the sporting structure and football operations,” the club said, via BBC Sport.

Corberan will leave Valencia alongside his first-team coaching staff, while CEO Ron Gourlay will also depart. Lisandro Isei, Hans Gillhaus, Andres Zamora and Malek Shafei are also leaving the club as part of changes to the club’s management.

For now, Valencia B coach Oscar Sanchez will take charge of the first team while the club works on appointing a permanent replacement.

“The club will announce the new structure for its football operations and the makeup of the upcoming sporting project shortly,” Valencia added.

Sadiq is currently out of action after he was sidelined with an injury since Valencia's defeat to Deportivo La Coruna last month.

The Super Eagles striker scored in that match before he was forced off with an injury and is expected to spend several months on the sidelines.
