Super Eagles news: 5 painful lessons from Nigeria’s AFCONQ 2027 loss to Guinea-Bissau

Nigeria Super Eagles' Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying campaign has suddenly taken a sharp turn, Soccernet.ng reports.

A team that began the qualifiers with a 2-1 comeback against Madagascar in Uyo was beaten 3-0 by Guinea-Bissau at the Estádio 24 de Setembro in Bissau on Tuesday.

Franculino Djú struck in the 15th minute, Mama Baldé doubled the lead in the 65th and Álvaro Djaló completed the damage in stoppage time. Fernando Embadjé also produced crucial saves, including one from Ademola Lookman before half-time and another from George Ilenikhena in the 85th minute.

The result is particularly damaging because Group L offers only one qualification place outside hosts Tanzania. Guinea-Bissau had already beaten Tanzania 2-0, while Nigeria's Super Eagles edged Madagascar 2-1, leaving the Djurtus with a powerful early advantage in a three-team race for the ticket.

1. Super Eagles have turned a one-ticket race into a chase

Tanzania are automatically qualified as co-hosts, meaning Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar are effectively fighting for one place.

Guinea-Bissau now have six points from two matches, while Nigeria have three, making November's fixtures far more important after the Super Eagles surrendered the advantage they gained against Madagascar.

2. The defence and midfield are crying out for control

Nigeria conceded against Madagascar and again against Guinea-Bissau, despite both opponents sitting outside FIFA's top 100. Madagascar are ranked 104th and Guinea-Bissau 132nd in FIFA's latest official ranking.

Calvin Bassey battled relentlessly across the back line in Bissau, but the midfield struggled to protect the defence as Djú and Baldé repeatedly found room to attack.

3. Osimhen's absence was painfully obvious

Victor Osimhen was unavailable because of injury, removing Nigeria's most established attacking reference point.

Taiwo Awoniyi and Akor Adams started but could not provide the threat needed to unsettle Guinea-Bissau, while Ilenikhena offered greater urgency after replacing Adams in the 75th minute and forced Embadjé into a save nine minutes later.

Bright Osayi-Samuel struggled to impose himself before being replaced in the 80th minute, while Nwabali was beaten three times.

Lookman also missed Nigeria's clearest first-half opening when Embadjé denied his effort after Iwobi's pass. The burden placed on the established stars was stark because Nigeria needed leadership and invention once the hosts seized control.

5. Chelle suffers his first competitive regulation-time defeat

The 3-0 loss also marked a significant first in Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles tenure. Since taking charge, the Franco-Malian coach had avoided defeat in regulation time across Nigeria’s competitive matches, making the collapse in Bissau his first such loss.

Interestingly, it is one of Nigeria's most embarrassing recent competitive defeats, and the worst ever against such a low-ranked opponent. Guinea-Bissau were 132nd in FIFA's July ranking compared with Nigeria's 26th, a 106-place gap.

Chelle now faces his first major setback in a competitive campaign with Nigeria, with the next AFCON qualifiers carrying greater pressure after the Super Eagles slipped three points behind Guinea-Bissau in Group L.
