The Super Eagles of Nigeria suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau in their second 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture in Bissau, Soccernet.ng reports.
Eric Chelle’s side went into Tuesday’s Group L clash hoping to build on their 2-1 comeback victory over Madagascar, but Franculino Djú, Mama Baldé and Álvaro Djaló all found the net to hand the Djurtus a convincing victory.

Guinea-Bissau 3-0 Super Eagles: Chelle's men humbled
Coach Eric Chelle made three changes from the win against Madagascar. Wilfred Ndidi, Frank Onyeka and Alex Iwobi started in midfield, with Ademola Lookman playing behind Akor Adams and Taiwo Awoniyi in Chelle’s 4-3-1-2 formation.

Nigeria struggled to settle in the opening stages, and the hosts eventually broke the deadlock in the 15th minute. Franculino was on hand to put Guinea-Bissau ahead, giving the Djurtus an early advantage in front of their home supporters.
The Trabzonspor forward dribbled past Bruno Onyemaechi before curling the ball into the bottom corner as Stanley Nwabali and Calvin Bassey watched without taking action.

The Super Eagles attempted to respond but could not find a way through a disciplined Guinea-Bissau defence.
Chelle reacted at half-time by making two changes, bringing on Moses Usor and Moses Simon for Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi respectively.
The changes gave Nigeria more attacking presence after the interval, but Guinea-Bissau remained dangerous whenever they moved forward.

Mama Baldé doubled Guinea-Bissau's lead
The hosts extended their advantage in the 66th minute through Baldé. The Brest forward, who had also scored in Guinea-Bissau’s opening 2-0 victory over Tanzania, once again punished Nigeria and put the Djurtus firmly in control of the contest.
He took advantage of Bright Osayi-Samuel's blind side and put the ball into the bottom corner, hitting the side of the woodwork and going in, with Stanley Nwabali again rooted to the spot.

Baldé's goal was another painful moment for the Super Eagles, having previously scored the only goal when Guinea-Bissau defeated Nigeria 1-0 in Abuja during the 2023 AFCON qualifiers.
Chelle responded by introducing Tolu Arokodare for Ademola Lookman in the 68th minute, while Guinea-Bissau also made changes as Emiliano Té looked to protect his side's advantage.

The Nigerian coach then made two further substitutions in the 76th minute, sending George Ilenikhena and Raphael Onyedika on for Akor Adams and Wilfred Ndidi.
Djaló sealed a heavy defeat for Nigeria
Nigeria pushed forward in search of a way back into the game, but Guinea-Bissau held firm and continued to threaten on the counter.
The hosts eventually added a third goal in the fifth minute of stoppage time. Álvaro Djaló, who had come on for Beto in the 79th minute, found the net in the 90+5th minute to complete a 3-0 victory for Guinea-Bissau.
The Athletic Club winger also took advantage of Osayi-Samuel's blind side, turned the Birmingham City defender inside out, before slowly passing the ball into the goal.

The final stats showed how Nigeria struggled to turn possession into a result. The Super Eagles had 55% possession and registered 12 shots, the same number as Guinea-Bissau, but the hosts managed seven shots on target compared with Nigeria’s five.
The defeat leaves Nigeria with three points after two Group L matches, while Guinea-Bissau move to six points after back-to-back victories.

What next for the Super Eagles?
The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to an international friendly against Russia on October 6 at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium.
The fixture comes exactly one week after their AFCON 2027 qualifier against Guinea-Bissau and will give Eric Chelle another opportunity to assess his squad ahead of November's qualifiers.
Nigeria and Russia last met in June 2025, when both teams played out a 1-1 draw in Moscow, with Tolu Arokodare scoring Nigeria’s equaliser after Semi Ajayi’s own goal had put the hosts ahead.
Chelle has already named a 24-man squad for the Russia friendly, with several new faces included alongside established players like Kelechi Iheanacho.
