Samuel Chukwueze: Amorim explains what could change for Nigerian star

AC Milan head coach Ruben Amorim has explained how Samuel Chukwueze’s role could change at the club as he considers playing the Nigerian forward alongside summer signing Diego Moreira more often, Soccernet.ng reports.

Chukwueze has emerged as one of Milan’s brightest players in the early stages of the 2026-27 Serie A season and has played an important role in their unbeaten start to the campaign.

The Rossoneri have won two and drawn two of their opening four league matches, with Chukwueze contributing two assists in his four appearances.

The 27-year-old spent last season on loan at Fulham in the English Premier League, but the London club eventually decided against making his move permanent despite the winger’s desire to remain in England.

However, Chukwueze has returned to AC Milan and taken on a new role under Amorim, who replaced Massimiliano Allegri as head coach during the summer.

The Super Eagles winger has been used as a wing-back and impressed in that position during pre-season, including a sensational display in Milan’s 4-2 victory over Manchester United.

He has carried that form into the new season and played the full 90 minutes in Milan’s opening two league games of the season before coming off the bench in their third match, a 1-1 draw against Juventus. The Nigerian star made an immediate impact after his introduction, providing the assist for Milan’s equaliser to help his side secure a point.

Amorim explains how Samuel Chukwueze and Diego Moreira could play together

AC Milan were held to a 2-2 draw by Lazio on Saturday, with Chukwueze once again playing the full 90 minutes. Moreira, on the other hand, came off the bench in the second half and scored twice in quick succession to rescue a point for Milan after they had fallen two goals behind.

Speaking after the game, Amorim defended his selection decisions and revealed that Chukwueze and Moreira could feature together more often in the coming games and occupy different wide positions within his system.

“I want to play with three defenders and two wide outsiders. So sometimes the two of them (Chukwueze and Moreira) will play and Moreira played really well on the left. He has experience playing on the left at Strasbourg. We know the players very well, so it will happen again in the future”, the former Manchester United boss said, via Calciomercato.

Moreira's introduction proved decisive against Lazio, with the summer arrival scoring twice in quick succession to bring Milan level.

Amorim also defended his decision to start the game in the same system despite Milan struggling to match Lazio's intensity in the first half.

“It's too easy to talk later, I'm not crazy that I make choices not to play well. The spirit of the second half was completely different, the way we approached the game. We have to start the game by understanding that we know what the most important match of our season will be, and therefore we can't play this way”, Amorim continued.

“We played like this in the second half because we were losing 2-0, but I don't want to say that I will change the formation. I will change… Maybe I'll do something extra to provoke that energy to play a different game.

“When did I realize it was time to change? It's hard to say a precise moment. I heard, and I think everyone in the stadium heard in the first five minutes, that they were playing at another speed.

“So I realized that either we changed something in our team or today we would suffer. I realized pretty early, in 10 minutes, that we weren't in the game compared to last week”, he concluded.

Samuel Chukwueze will now hope to maintain his impressive start to the campaign as he looks to establish himself as an important player at AC Milan under Amorim.

The Rossoneri return to action on Wednesday when they face Portuguese side Benfica in the UEFA Europa League.
