Alex Iwobi’s ultimate Super Eagles 5-a-side: Kanu, Yobo in, Yekini & Keshi snubbed

Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi has revealed the five Super Eagles legends he would select if he were picking a five-a-side squad, Soccernet.ng reports.

​Nigeria are set to kick off their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations campaign on Friday, and Iwobi, alongside the 23 players that the coach invited to the national team camp, has begun preparations.

​They face off against Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on Friday, and ahead of the game, some of the players spoke to members of the Nigerian media.

​Fulham star Iwobi is one of the veterans on the team, having registered over 100 caps for Nigeria, and he will be looking to add more appearances under his belt.

​In a quick interview on Wednesday, he was asked to build a dream Super Eagles five-a-side team, and he gave a pretty interesting lineup.

​Iwobi named a strong 5-aside team. However, notable absentees from his team are all-time highest goalscorer Victor Osimhen and former Africa Cup of Nations winner Stephen Keshi.

​”I'll put Vincent Enyeama in goal, I'll put Joseph Yobo, I'll put my uncle Jay-Jay Okocha, Kanu, and I will also put Obi Mikel,” the 30-year-old midfielder said.

​Other Super Eagles players also named their own five-a-side teams, and interestingly, Victor Osimhen was a prominent name on their lists.

​The Galatasaray star is just two goals behind Rashidi Yekini on the Super Eagles' all-time goalscorers' charts, so his presence there is understandable.

​Nonetheless, in the meantime, the Nigeria national team will be looking to claim the maximum three points from their game against Madagascar on Friday.

​They head into that fixture as heavy favourites, and anything less than a win will be a major disappointment for Eric Chelle and his lads.

​Iwobi is a sure starter for Nigeria, and that will see him rise to 101 caps for the Super Eagles, level with Vincent Enyeama. He would need ten more caps to draw level with Ahmed Musa, who has 111.

The last time that Nigeria faced Madagascar was in 2019, and it was the latter that won, 2-0. Interestingly, Wilfred Ndidi, Iwobi, and Moses Simon featured in that game. Other players who were in that squad and are present in this squad are Ola Aina, Samuel Chukwueze, and Osimhen.

​Only one team will qualify from Nigeria's group, so Nigeria has to start the qualifiers on a strong note in Uyo.
