Super Eagles target set for Crystal Palace loan before Chelsea transfer

Crystal Palace are closing in on a season-long loan deal for 18-year-old defender Honest Ahanor, Soccernet.ng reports.

Ahanor is expected to spend the 2026-27 season at Palace before joining Chelsea permanently in the summer of 2027, according to Football-Italia. The reports put the Chelsea agreement at about £40m, with the full package potentially reaching €48m including bonuses and add-ons.

The unusual part of the deal is how Ahanor will get to Selhurst Park. Chelsea have agreed a future transfer with Atalanta, but Ahanor will not first become a Chelsea player and then move to Palace. Instead, he is set to join Palace directly from Atalanta on loan for the 2026-27 campaign. Chelsea and Atalanta have a binding agreement for the defender to move to Stamford Bridge in 2027.

The structure is important because Palace have already taken Axel Disasi from Chelsea on loan this summer. Premier League rules say a club cannot register more than one loan player from the same English club at the same time. The rules also state that a Premier League club cannot loan a player to another Premier League club if it acquired that player in the same transfer window.

Ahanor's move from Atalanta avoids those restrictions because Atalanta are an Italian club. Premier League rules state that loans from clubs belonging to another national association do not count towards the domestic loan quota.

Why Palace want Ahanor now

Palace's need for another defender increased after Chadi Riad suffered a serious knee injury in the opening game of the Premier League season against Everton on 22 August.

Riad was forced off in the 72nd minute of the 2-0 defeat at Everton after twisting his knee while trying to stop Thierno Barry. He was replaced by Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Further reports said scans confirmed an anterior cruciate ligament injury, which is expected to keep the Morocco international out for a long period. Palace manager Pierre Sage had earlier said the club needed specialist advice before giving a firm recovery timetable.

Ahanor gives Sage another option because he can operate as a left-back and in central defence. That flexibility is useful for a Palace team starting a new era under Sage and preparing for a season that includes European football.

The teenager also arrives with experience beyond his age. During the 2025-26 campaign, he made 22 Serie A appearances for Atalanta and played in nine Champions League matches. The youngster also made his Italy senior debut against Luxembourg on 3 June 2026 before starting against Greece four days later.

Ahanor was born in Aversa, Italy, on 23 February 2008 and was raised in Genoa. His parents are Nigerian, and he obtained Italian citizenship shortly after turning 18 in February 2026. The Italian Football Federation then called him into the Italy Under-21 squad.

His senior Italy appearances do not automatically end his connection with Nigeria. FIFA rules allow certain players to change association if they meet specific conditions. Players who have made up to three senior appearances before turning 21 can qualify to switch in certain circumstances, while FIFA's regulations also set conditions linked to official competitions and nationality.

Ahanor's two senior Italy appearances in June were against Luxembourg and Greece and both were friendly matches. That means his international future is still a separate issue from his club move, with Nigeria potentially able to make a case if he satisfies FIFA's requirements.

The immediate priority, however, is the move to London. Palace are preparing Ahanor for the 2026-27 season, while Chelsea are planning for a player they expect to own permanently from 2027.

The deal therefore solves three problems at once: Palace get a young defender during an injury crisis, Ahanor gets Premier League experience, and Chelsea secure a highly rated teenager without needing to place him directly into their first-team squad.
