Super Eagles duo Taiwo Awoniyi and Frank Onyeka were both in action for Coventry City as they suffered a 3-0 defeat to Arsenal in their opening game of the 2026-27 English Premier League season, Soccernet.ng reports.

Awoniyi completed a £9 million move to the Sky Blues earlier this week from Nottingham Forest.

Meanwhile, Onyeka’s permanent transfer was completed earlier in the summer after he enjoyed an impressive loan spell at the club during the second half of last season and helped them secure promotion to the Premier League.

However, Coventry faced a daunting task on their return to the top flight and were given a difficult welcome by Arsenal, who completely dominated the newly promoted side.

Kai Havertz opened the scoring in the 15th minute before Bukayo Saka doubled Arsenal’s advantage just eight minutes later as Mikel Arteta’s side produced a dominant display.

Captain Martin Odegaard added a third four minutes after the restart, and although Arsenal had opportunities to score even more, they eventually settled for a 3-0 victory to begin their title defence on a positive note.

For Frank Lampard and Coventry, the defeat revealed the level they must reach if they are to compete successfully in the Premier League. However, there were still some positives to take from the performances of the two Nigerian players.

Onyeka makes case for long-term role

It was a difficult afternoon for the midfielder, particularly because Arsenal controlled the midfield and gave Coventry very little time or space to build attacks.

Despite the difficult circumstances, Onyeka showed some encouraging signs. He made nine defensive contributions and completed three line-breaking passes, while also completing all four of the long balls he attempted.

The Nigerian also committed three fouls without receiving a yellow card and earned a 6.2 rating from FotMob. While his performance was not spectacular, it showed why Coventry were keen to make his move permanent after his successful loan spell last season.

The Super Eagles star’s energy, defensive work and ability to cover ground could prove important for Coventry as they face more experienced Premier League midfielders throughout the season.

The Arsenal game was a reminder that he will have to improve his work with the ball, but his defensive qualities could make him an important player for Lampard in the long term.

Awoniyi’s slow debut could open the door for a start

Unlike Onyeka, Awoniyi started the match on the bench and was introduced in the second half, with the striker getting around 20 minutes to make an impression.

It was quite difficult for the Nigerian to have a major impact in such a short period, especially against an Arsenal side that was already comfortably in control of the game.

Awoniyi barely had a clear opportunity in front of goal as Arsenal’s defenders did a good job of limiting Coventry’s attacking threat.

However, his arrival could soon give Lampard another option in attack. Ellis Simms, who started ahead of Awoniyi, endured a difficult outing as Coventry struggled to create chances, and that could give the former Nottingham Forest striker an opportunity to push for a starting role.

Awoniyi’s previous experience in the Premier League could also work in his favour. Lampard had previously highlighted that experience as one of the reasons the club were interested in bringing him to Coventry.

With more minutes and better service from his teammates, the 29-year-old should have opportunities to show why Coventry were willing to spend £9 million to sign him.

What next for the two Nigerian stars?

Both Super Eagles stars endured difficult outings in Coventry’s first Premier League game of the season, but the Arsenal defeat should not be used to judge what they can offer throughout the campaign.

Onyeka already appears to have a strong chance of becoming an important part of Lampard’s midfield, while Awoniyi could soon be pushing for a starting position as he settles into his new environment.

Coventry will return to action on Tuesday when they face Plymouth Argyle in the second round of the EFL Cup before hosting Hull City in the Premier League next weekend.
