Newcastle United and Denmark striker William Idemudia Osula could be set for a shock Super Eagles switch in the coming weeks after the Nigerian Football Federation launched an official approach, Soccernet.ng reports.

The 22-year-old has always been tipped to be the next big football star since his time at Manchester United's Carrington Academy.

While he's found minutes hard to come by this season, Osula scored a belter six weeks ago against his former side, five minutes after coming off the bench.

Still, the Denmark-born striker has managed just 455 minutes for Eddie Howe's side in the Premier League this season, starting just three games, and scoring four.

NFF approach William Osula over possible Super Eagles switch

Osula was born in Aarhus, Denmark, to a Danish mother and a Nigerian-French Father. The family moved to England when the striker was a toddler, and as such, he holds a French and English passport, and a Nigerian one could be on the cards.

He's played for the Danish U-19 team and was called up to the senior team late last year, but an injury forced him to withdraw, delaying a potential debut and a potential tie of national allegiance.

As per Danish outlet, Tipsbladet, the former Sheffield United striker has been approached by the Nigerian Football Association over a potential switch, and is currently at a crossroads.

Coach Eric Chelle revealed he'll be combing Europe to add more talents to the Super Eagles squad in preparation for the AFCON 2027 tournament, and to lay a solid foundation for Nigeria's 2030 FIFA World Cup campaign, after missing the previous two editions.

Denmark failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup after losing 3-1 on penalties to ‌the Czech Republic in Prague after a 2-2 draw in the playoff final, similar to the fate Nigeria suffered against DR Congo back in November.

With the Mundial out of the picture for both these nations, Denmark don't particularly hold an advantage over the NFF in this particular scenario.

Should Osula play for Nigeria?

The striker's Nigerian genes pop up whenever they can. The Manchester United academy graduate famously refers to himself as a ‘naija' boy, and even speaks a bit of pidgin English from time to time, calling seasoning cubes ‘maggi', a feature synonymous to the Green and Whites.

He's also been seen preparing Nigerian delicacies. He once prepared poundo flour and Ogbono soup, even inviting teammates like Joseph Willock and Isak [before the move to Liverpool] to share the moment. Watch the video here.

Nigeria's attack is currently stacked with innumerable talents. Victor Osimhen, when fit, is untouchable, and Akor Adams has become a regular in Eric Chelle's 4-4-2 system since making his debut in October 2025.

Paul Onuachu, Victor Boniface, Kelechi Iheanacho, Cyriel Dessers, Sadiq Umar and Tolu Arokodare are also worthy options that have shown they can step up when needed for the three-time African Champions.

Breaking into the frontline will be a tough ask for Osula, but the bright side is the chance to learn the ropes from some of the best finishers in the World, while positioning himself as a frontrunner ahead of the 2030 FIFA World Cup.

In four years, only Tolu Arokodare will be less than 30 in the Super Eagles attack, and the move to secure Osula is a step in the right direction from the NFF, showing they're putting in the groundwork to avoid taking an aged squad to the next Mundial set to be hosted by Morocco, Portugal and Spain.

Ultimately, the choice is down to the young striker. Breaking into the Super Eagles first team right now is impossible, and Denmark looks like a suitable option at the moment.

If he's thinking long-term and is willing to take on brief cameos when invited, then the switch is just perfect. Representing Denmark takes nothing away from the Nigerian heritage already brimming through the Newcastle United forward.
