Super Eagles defender Chibuike Nwaiwu has expressed his delight following his international debut in Nigeria's 2-1 victory over Iran on Friday, Soccernet.ng reports.
Nwaiwu was a late addition to the squad, called up only after Calvin Bassey withdrew from the international break.
Having received the summons just yesterday, his inclusion marks another big milestone in a career that has grown in leaps and bounds since 2024.

The Trabzonspor defender has enjoyed a meteoric rise, moving from Enyimba just two years ago to becoming a regular for one of Turkey’s biggest clubs.
Despite playing his club football in Turkey—the host nation for Nigeria's friendly—many expected Nwaiwu to be unavailable so soon after his call-up.
However, coach Eric Chelle named him on the bench and thrust him into the fray early in the second half after Igoh Ogbu sustained an injury.
Though Nwaiwu had a slow start — occasionally dwelling on the ball too long — he eventually settled into the rhythm of the game, helping the Super Eagles grind out the 2-1 win.

”A Dream Come True” – Chibuike Nwaiwu Happy About Super Eagles Debut
Speaking after the match, Nwaiwu admitted the experience was surreal. Reflecting on his journey from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) to the national team.
”It’s a privilege for me to represent my country; it is the dream of every footballer in the world,” Nwaiwu said.
“I am very happy to be here and to have made my debut today. [Iran] is a very good side that consistently qualifies for the World Cup, but we took our chances and did a great job.

Nwaiwu credited his faith and persistence for the opportunity:
”I believe in God and I believe hard work pays off. Ever since my time in the NPFL, I always told myself I would wear the national team shirt. When I received the message at my club, I was so excited that I nearly missed my flight! Seeing the news and my club’s announcement was a truly great moment.”
Nwaiwu will be eager to build on this performance in Nigeria's next outing. With Ogbu’s injury status uncertain, the 26-year-old is likely to start the upcoming match against Jordan, where Chelle will be banking on a composed showing from him.
