Nigeria’s two biggest stars in the Turkish Super Lig will share the same pitch on Saturday evening as Victor Osimhen and Wilfred Ndidi go head-to-head in one of football’s most intense rivalries when Galatasaray travel across the city to face Besiktas, Soccernet.ng reports.
The Istanbul derby at Tupras Stadium is already one of the most heated fixtures in Turkish football, but this edition carries added intrigue for Nigerian fans. It pits the Super Eagles’ attacking spearhead against their midfield anchor; two players who are central to Nigeria’s ambitions on the international stage.
Both men were key figures during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where Ndidi captained Nigeria and Osimhen scored four goals as the team finished third. Their partnership at international level has been built on mutual respect, Ndidi providing the steel in midfield while Osimhen delivers the cutting edge in attack.
This weekend, however, they will stand on opposite sides of the battle lines.
Osimhen arrives in the derby as the most valuable player in the Turkish Super Lig, with a reported market value of €75 million. The Galatasaray striker has enjoyed another prolific campaign, scoring 10 league goals, adding seven in the UEFA Champions League, and continuing to show why he is considered one of Europe’s most dangerous forwards.
The 27-year-old returned from injury in style by scoring and assisting in Galatasaray’s recent 3-1 league victory over Alanyaspor, instantly reminding supporters of his match-winning qualities.
According to Galatasaray reporter Kaya Temel, the Nigerian striker has also been driving standards behind the scenes.
“Osimhen is incredibly motivated. He is amazingly energizing the team, and he continues to do so. He motivated his teammates very well in training.”
Temel added that the squad’s immediate focus is clear: “
We are making plans to definitely get three points from the Beşiktaş derby and then further increase our chances of winning the championship.”
Galatasaray enter the weekend top of the Super Lig table with 58 points, holding a four-point lead over fierce rivals Fenerbahce. Okan Buruk’s side are also balancing a demanding schedule, with a Champions League round-of-16 clash against Liverpool looming next week.
Yet victory in this derby would represent another major step toward the title.
Ndidi’s unbeaten Besiktas stand in Osimhen’s way in Istanbul
Standing between Osimhen and another derby triumph is a Besiktas side built around the defensive authority of Wilfred Ndidi.
The Nigerian midfielder joined the Black Eagles last summer and has quickly become the heartbeat of the team. His ball-winning, positional awareness and leadership have helped power an impressive run of results.
Besiktas are currently on an 18-match unbeaten run in all competitions, including 13 consecutive league matches without defeat, a surge that has lifted them into fourth place with 46 points.
Ndidi himself produced a standout display last weekend, scoring with a ninth-minute header in a 4-0 victory over Goztepe, a performance that earned him the Man of the Match award.
His influence goes far beyond goals. Much like during his long spell at Leicester City, Ndidi has become the shield in front of Besiktas' defence; breaking up opposition attacks and allowing creative players further forward to flourish.
Saturday’s encounter will not be the first time Osimhen and Ndidi have faced each other as club opponents. During their time in Europe’s top leagues, they previously clashed when Napoli met Leicester City in European competition. Osimhen scored twice as both teams played out a 2-2 draw in the Europa League in a game Ndidi was shown two yellow cards and sent off.
Earlier this season, they also lined up against one another when Galatasaray and Besiktas played out a tense 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture.
With two draws in their two previous meetings, Ndidi and Osimhen will be keen to experience a first victory over the other.
However, beyond the familiar Super Eagles story of Osimhen and Ndidi, the Istanbul derby carries huge significance.
It offers Besiktas the chance to disrupt the title race and extend their impressive resurgence under Sergen Yalcin. For Galatasaray, however, three points would maintain their advantage at the summit and deliver a psychological blow to their rivals.
