Genoa 0-2 Udinese: How Maduka Okoye fared ahead of Super Eagles friendlies

Super Eagles shotstopper Maduka Okoye delivered another solid performance as Udinese defeated Genoa 2-0 in a tough Serie A match on Friday night, Soccernet.ng reports.

The Nigerian goalkeeper was calm and focused throughout the game, helping his team keep a clean sheet, his seventh of the season. But the scoreline does not tell the full story, as this was far from an easy night for Okoye.

Genoa started the match strongly and created the first chances. Early in the game, Ruslan Malinovskyi tried his luck from distance but fired over the bar. Udinese responded with some attacking moves of their own, but struggled to break through.

The biggest moments of danger came in the first half when Genoa hit the crossbar twice. First, Malinovskyi’s powerful free-kick crashed against the woodwork, leaving Okoye beaten. Moments later, Lorenzo Colombo also struck the bar from close range after a quick attack.

Despite Genoa dominating possession and pushing forward, Okoye remained composed, organising his defence and staying alert. His positioning and communication helped Udinese survive the pressure as the first half ended goalless.

After the break, Okoye truly came into the spotlight. Just two minutes into the second half, Junior Messias fired a powerful shot towards goal, but Okoye reacted quickly with a strong two-handed save to deny him.

There was more drama when Genoa were awarded a penalty after a handball decision. However, after a VAR review by referee Giuseppe Collu, the decision was overturned, giving Udinese a big escape.

Udinese then took control. In the 66th minute, Jurgen Ekkelenkamp scored with a close-range header to give the visitors the lead. Genoa pushed for an equaliser, but Okoye stood firm, making important saves and handling crosses confidently.

Late in the game, Keinan Davis sealed the win with a second goal deep into stoppage time.

By the final whistle, Okoye had made two saves, two punches, two clearances, and six recoveries, in a performance that showed both confidence and control.

Maduka Okoye builds momentum for Super Eagles chance

Okoye’s performance could not have come at a better time for Nigeria national football team.

Just last week, he was outstanding despite Udinese losing 1-0 to Juventus. His display in that match earned him recognition as the best goalkeeper of the round in Serie A.

Now, with a clean sheet and another confident outing, Okoye is building strong momentum ahead of Nigeria’s upcoming friendly matches.

The Super Eagles are set to face Jordan and Iran in Turkey. These games will be important for the team as they prepare for future competitions.

With first-choice goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali not included in the squad, Okoye is expected to step in as the main goalkeeper. This gives him a big opportunity to impress head coach Eric Chelle.

For Okoye, this is more than just two friendly matches. It is a chance to prove he deserves to be Nigeria’s number one goalkeeper ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

His last appearance for Nigeria came in a 1-1 draw against Russia last year. Since then, he missed out on the squad for the Africa Cup of Nations, where Nigeria finished third.

Now, he has returned stronger, more confident, and in better form.

If he can carry his club performances into the national team, Maduka Okoye may finally establish himself as a key player for Nigeria.
