CAF President Patrice Motsepe confirms who will host WAFCON 2026

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Patrice Motsepe has confirmed that the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON 2026) will proceed in Morocco as planned, Soccernet.ng reports.

Morocco, having successfully hosted the 2022 edition, were awarded the hosting rights for both the 2024 and 2026 tournaments back in 2024.

Even though the 2024 edition was rescheduled to 2025 due to a congested football calendar, the North African nation proved their quality by showcasing world-class infrastructure and providing an excellent hosting experience for the continent.

Despite Morocco's proven track record, speculation had recently emerged suggesting the North Africans might relinquish their hosting rights following the controversy-marred 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

These rumors gained momentum as South Africa publicly indicated their readiness to step in as an alternative host.

However, CAF President Patrice Motsepe has now put those rumors to rest, confirming there will be no change in venue for the upcoming tournament.

CAF President Confirms Morocco as WAFCON 2026 Hosts

Speaking at a press conference following Friday’s Executive Committee meeting, the CAF President reaffirmed Morocco’s status as the tournament destination.

”We've had extensive discussions, and there is significant competition to host our events,” Motsepe told journalists.

”You may recall Morocco stepped in to assist previously. While many countries wanted to host, our standards are very high and timelines were tight.

“Even now, several nations are interested and have asked, ‘Please, can we host it?' but they want to change the dates. We cannot change the dates because this tournament serves as a qualifier for the FIFA Women's World Cup.

“The WAFCON will continue, it will be successful, and we will ensure it takes place within this specific window.”

The stakes for the 2026 edition are incredibly high, as the tournament will serve as the official African qualifying route for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup in Brazil.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria, who secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Morocco to claim the title in 2025, will be eager to defend their crown. The 2026 WAFCON is scheduled to kick off on March 17 and run through April 3.
