The Africa Cup of Nations has always promised drama. AFCON 2025 has delivered it in abundance.

From pristine pitches to colourful stands, from Moroccan warmth to a carnival of African culture, this tournament has matched, and arguably surpassed, its billing. Yet for all the organisation, hospitality and spectacle off the field, the true fireworks have come where they matter most: on the pitch.

Across 36 group-stage matches, 87 goals were scored. Only Comoros and Botswana failed to find the net. Seventeen games produced three or more goals, while just three ended goalless. The margins were tight, the emotions raw, and the narratives relentless.

Picking the five best matches was no easy task. But after Soccernet.ng revisited every game, these stood above the rest; contests defined by quality, chaos, courage and consequence.

AFCON 2025 Top Matches – Egypt 2-1 Zimbabwe: Salah saves the Pharaohs

Egypt flirted with disaster on matchday one before Mohamed Salah reminded everyone why he remains Africa’s most decisive footballer.

Zimbabwe stunned the seven-time champions when Prince Dube gave them a 20th-minute lead in Agadir, punishing Egypt’s profligacy despite relentless pressure. The Pharaohs dominated possession, territory and shots – 35 attempts to Zimbabwe’s eight – but found Washington Arubi in inspired form.

Manchester City star Omar Marmoush finally broke the resistance in the 64th minute, rifling into the roof of the net after a surging run. Yet it still seemed one of those days, until Salah intervened.

In added time, his bobbled, improvised finish crept past Arubi to spark wild Egyptian celebrations. It was a reminder of Salah’s enduring authority and Egypt’s refusal to fold, setting the tone for their group campaign under intense early pressure.

AFCON 2025 Top Matches – Nigeria 3-2 Tunisia: Brilliance, then survival

Nigeria’s thrilling win over Tunisia was a match of two halves: dominance followed by desperation.

The Super Eagles were electric early on, swarming Tunisia and creating chances at will. Victor Osimhen, masked and relentless, eventually headed Nigeria ahead just before the break. Wilfred Ndidi doubled the lead shortly after half-time, and Ademola Lookman made it 3–0 after Osimhen turned provider.

 Then the chaos arrived.

Tunisia struck back through Montassar Talbi before Ali Abdi converted a late penalty, punishing a nervous Nigerian defence. Ferjani Sassi’s stoppage-time header went agonisingly close, but Nigeria held on.

It was Nigeria at their most exhilarating, and vulnerable. A match that highlighted both the Super Eagles' title credentials and the thin margins that define AFCON knockout football.

AFCON 2025 Top Matches – Gabon 2-3 Mozambique: History written in Agadir

This was not just a great game. It was a historic one.

Mozambique claimed their first-ever AFCON finals victory, ending a 16-game winless run in unforgettable fashion.

Faisal Bangal’s header and Geny Catamo’s penalty gave the Mambas control before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang pulled one back for Gabon on the stroke of half-time.

Diogo Calila restored Mozambique’s two-goal cushion early in the second half, but Gabon refused to go quietly. Alex Moucketou-Moussounda’s close-range finish set up a breathless finale.

What followed was 20 minutes of pure AFCON: end-to-end football, frantic defending and raw emotion. Mozambique survived to make history, rewarding years of quiet progress under coach Chiquinho Conde.

AFCON 2025 Top Matches – Gabon 2-3 Ivory Coast: Champions roar back

Ivory Coast’s comeback against Gabon on matchday three was a masterclass in resilience.

Stunned by early goals from Guelor Kanga and Denis Bouanga, the defending champions looked vulnerable and disjointed. Jean-Philippe Krasso’s goal just before half-time offered hope, but Gabon still sensed an upset.

Instead, Ivory Coast dug deep. Evann Guessand levelled late on, before substitute Bazoumana Touré struck in stoppage time to complete a stunning turnaround.

The victory sealed top spot in Group F and reaffirmed why Ivory Coast remain one of the tournament’s most feared sides: calm under pressure, ruthless when it matters.

AFCON 2025 Top Matches – Burkina Faso 2-1 Equatorial Guinea: Eight minutes of madness

AFCON rarely saves its wildest drama for last, but this match did.

Equatorial Guinea, reduced to 10 men after Basilio Ndong’s red card, somehow took the lead in the 85th minute through Marvin Anieboh. Burkina Faso looked stunned.

Then came eight minutes of stoppage time that felt eternal.

Georgi Minoungou equalised with a composed finish, before Edmond Tapsoba, on his 27th AFCON appearance, reacted quickest to a rebound to head home the winner.

It was football at its most unforgiving and most glorious. A match decided by belief, bravery and a refusal to accept defeat.
