It is Nigeria vs Morocco on Wednesday night in Rabat as two of Africa’s most compelling football stories collide under the lights of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
Nigeria, the tournament’s most exhilarating attacking force, face hosts Morocco, the competition’s most resilient defensive machine, with a place in the Africa Cup of Nations final at stake.
This is a chance for the Super Eagles to reach a ninth AFCON final and move one step closer to a fourth continental crown. It is also an opportunity for Morocco to write a historic chapter in front of 68,000 expectant supporters and edge closer to a first title since 1976.

Both teams arrive unbeaten. Both have brushed aside strong opponents. And both now face their hardest examination of the tournament.
Preview
Nigeria have been the tournament’s great entertainers and its most ruthless finishers. Five games, five wins, 14 goals scored. No other side has looked as devastating going forward.

Under Eric Chelle, the Super Eagles have married physical power with speed, precision and a devastating understanding between Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen.
Morocco, by contrast, have built their campaign on control, discipline and defensive perfection. Walid Regragui’s men have conceded just once in five matches and none from open play. They do not overwhelm opponents; they suffocate them.
This semi-final feels like a referendum on modern tournament football: is it better to score more than the opposition, or to make sure the opposition barely score at all?
The atmosphere will be ferocious. The stakes could not be higher.

How they reached the semi-finals
Nigeria opened AFCON 2025 with a composed 2-1 win over Tanzania, then produced one of the games of the tournament to beat Tunisia 3-2.
A rotated side dispatched Uganda 3-1 before the Super Eagles truly announced themselves with a ruthless 4-0 demolition of Mozambique in the round of 16. In the quarter-finals, they delivered a mature, authoritative 2-0 victory over Algeria, one of the pre-tournament favourites.

Morocco’s journey has been more measured but no less impressive. They topped their group with wins over Comoros and Zambia and a draw against Mali, before eliminating Tanzania and Cameroon in the knockout stage. Throughout, they have looked controlled, patient and almost impossible to break down.
Both teams are unbeaten. Only one will remain so.
Head-to-head record
This will be the sixth time Nigeria and Morocco meet at the Africa Cup of Nations, and the first in 22 years. Their AFCON history is perfectly balanced in drama and significance.

They first met in 1976, with Morocco winning both group-stage games on their way to the title.
Nigeria famously got their revenge in the 1980 semi-final, Felix Owolabi’s early goal sending the Super Eagles into a final they would go on to win. Nigeria also beat Morocco 2-0 in 2000, while the Atlas Lions claimed a 1-0 group-stage victory in 2004.
All five AFCON meetings have produced a winner. Overall, the two sides have met 11 times: Morocco have six wins, Nigeria three, with two draws.
Team news
Nigeria must cope without their captain and midfield anchor Wilfred Ndidi, suspended after picking up a second yellow card against Algeria. It is a significant absence, both tactically and emotionally.

Raphael Onyedika is expected to step in, offering energy and ball-winning ability, though without Ndidi’s experience and authority.
There is also concern over Bright Osayi-Samuel, who limped off late in the quarter-final. He remains a doubt, with Igoh Ogbu on standby. Cyriel Dessers is ruled out while Ryan Alebiosu has returned to team training after a leg injury but may not feature at all.
Morocco are without Azzedine Ounahi, sidelined by a calf injury, while Romain Saiss remains unavailable. The good news for the hosts is that Achraf Hakimi is fit and available, a huge boost both defensively and in attack.

Possible line-ups
Nigeria (4-3-1-2 diamond):
Nwabali; Osayi-Samuel, Ajayi, Bassey, Onyemaechi; Onyeka, Onyedika, Iwobi; Lookman; Osimhen, Adams.
Morocco (4-3-3):
Bono; Hakimi, Aguerd, Masina, Mazraoui; El Khannouss, El Aynaoui, Saibari; Diaz, Ezzalzouli, El Kaabi.
Key players to watch
For Nigeria, the spotlight inevitably falls on Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen.
Lookman has been directly involved in seven goals at this AFCON alone (three goals, four assists) and 11 across the last two tournaments, more than any other player. He has become Nigeria’s man for the biggest moments.

Osimhen, meanwhile, brings energy, star power and relentless movement. Even when he does not score, he distorts defences and creates space for others.
For Morocco, everything revolves around Brahim Díaz. The Real Madrid forward has scored in five consecutive AFCON matches, equalling a 58-year-old record set by Ghana’s Osei Kofi. One more goal would give him a piece of African football history.
Behind him, Hakimi’s running and Saibari’s intelligence in midfield are also crucial to Morocco’s balance.
