Christantus Uche produced a moment of magic at Selhurst Park on Thursday night, scoring a stunning goal that left English football experts in awe, even as Crystal Palace were held to a 2-2 draw by KuPS in the Europa Conference League, Soccernet.ng reports.
Uche, handed his first start at Selhurst Park in a heavily rotated Palace side, opened the scoring inside five minutes with a stunning outside-of-the-boot finish that curled beyond goalkeeper Walter Benitez and into the top corner. It was Palace’s fastest start in the competition this season and a goal that instantly elevated the mood inside the stadium.
The Nigeria international picked up the ball on the edge of the area, shifted it onto his left, and finished with the outside of his right boot; a technique that blended instinct, composure and technical confidence. The strike was his second goal in successive Conference League matches, as his influence in recent weeks continues to grow since arriving on loan from Getafe on deadline day.
The quality of the finish drew instant admiration from TNT Sports pundits (via BBC), including former Crystal Palace defender Joel Ward.
On Uche’s opener, Ward said, “It was some finish. It was encouraging to see George play forward and break the lines, and it was a wonderful guided finish into the corner from Uche.
“You can probably get carried away sometimes trying to hit it too hard but its like he just hit that finesse button to place it into the corner.”
Former Leeds striker Lucy Ward was equally effusive in her assessment.
Ward said, “That was absolutely brilliant from start to finish. From the build up on this right hand side to the incredible finish from Uche. Little turn, outside of the right foot, curled it into the corner. Amazing.”

Oliver Glasner praises Christantus Uche but Palace lose control
Despite the electric opening, Palace were unable to maintain control for long spells, allowing KuPS back into the contest as the structure of the game loosened.
After recovering from a minor knock that required brief attention from the physios, Uche nearly doubled Palace’s lead in the 26th minute but failed to find the target. His influence, however, remained clear, as he led the line with intelligence and energy in an unfamiliar attacking role.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner was quick to single out the midfielder for praise after the final whistle, while also offering a candid assessment of his side’s overall performance.
On how he saw the 2-2 draw, Glasner told TNT Sports:
“I was pleased with the performance especially of the youngsters. Of course, fantastic goal from Uche, and then we could see we lost a little bit of structure for ten to fifteen minutes, and you get three finishes at the end and score two goals.”
The Austrian coach confirmed that the changes were deliberate, with one eye firmly on the Premier League.
“We rested a few players tonight because we knew we will need them for a game in a few days.
“Leeds now know our starting XI because none of the players who started today will play on Saturday, it will be a competitive game.”
Since joining Palace, Uche has made six Premier League appearances, all from the bench, and will not make his full league debut against Leeds United this weekend. He is among several players scheduled for a recovery session on Friday ahead of the trip to Elland Road.
The draw was enough for KuPS to secure 22nd place in the table and a playoff spot. For Palace, finishing 10th means there will be no automatic passage to the Round of 16 and more European hurdles still to clear.
