Arsenal FC star Bukayo Saka has opened up about the deep cultural values that continue to shape his identity, Soccernet.ng reports.

The English forward revealed why his Nigerian roots remain central to who he is despite spending his entire life in London.

The Arsenal winger, born to Nigerian parents, said his upbringing and name reflect a strong connection to the culture that raised him through his family.

The 23-year-old also admitted that many of the qualities he carries today were heavily influenced by the Nigerian values instilled in him from childhood.

Bukayo Saka Proud of his Nigerian identity

Saka, in an interview with BBC, said he considers his Nigerian identity a major part of his character, even though his formative years were spent in England.

“My name is Bukayo Moses Ayoyinka Temidayo Saka. I am very proud of it” he said. “Both my parents grew up in Nigeria, so many of their values have been instilled in me.”

Explaining his Nigerian origin, these principles from his parents has continued to influence his behaviour as a footballer.

The Arsenal star’s Nigerian roots

Saka’s Nigerian heritage traces back to both sides of his family, who come from Yoruba-speaking parts of the country.

His mother, Adenike, hails from Ijomu-Oro in Kwara State, while his father, Yomi, comes from Ogun State. Reports also note that Saka has visited his grandparents in Kwara.

His first name, Bukayo, is Yoruba which means “adds to happiness,”. This is a cultural marker the Arsenal’s number 7 proudly carries.
